For me personally, I wouldn't say that Chess ITSELF has changed my life, but rather, changes happening in my life helped introduce me to the love of chess that I have, which in turn, altered the way I think or even act in my every day life. After I got married, and bought the house my wife and I live, I had to curb my frivalous spending considerably. I was the typical "boy with his expensive toys" kind of guy. The greatest thing I discovered about chess, oddly enough, is that the operating costs are minimal (unless you drop thousands of dollars in custom made chess sets). This in turn changed my life (for the better), and focussed my attention to something that provides me with as much, if not more, enjoyment than keeping up with the techie crowd / gadget geeks. I even think more analytically now, and tend to explore much more avenues of thought before making decisions. I think it's different for everybody. As Harris Aldabo said, it changed players like Fischer and Kasparov due to the fame and fortune they received from it. Would I like to rise to that level of chess playing? Sure, who here wouldn't? But having chess introduce me to a simpler lifestyle for me is just as rewarding.
