Against e4 - Alekhine's defence - the Chase or Modern variations, it doesn't matter - whilst initially quite passive, it gives Black good chances for counterplay, and control of the centre, once White's pawn structure has been undermined. Against d4 - well, this is a toss-up between the Neo-Grunfeld and the Bogo-Indian - most players I play against can counter the Main Line Grunfeld, and Kings & Queen's Indian, so I have to improvise! As white, Bird's Opening has given me the best results, but the King's Indian attack (Barcza system) also works quite well, and the Richter-Versov system has won me a couple of games.

I agree with Braco. The opening 1 e4 d5! is known as the Scandinavian or the Center-Counter. If anyone would like to know more about this opening, I am currently organizing a Scandinavian tournament. Visit the tournament section and join!
