What chess means to me

Chess to me is a life style. The way one plays chess will go a long way to tell about one’s inner most characters. It usually tells if you are a cruel or greedy or even of a comproming nature.

My history with chess goes back about 17 years ago, precisely 1991 when i first go introduced to it by  my elder sister. Immediately ,i got interested and within weeks i was beating my brothers and sister silly. In my county,i went in search of chess players and i made sure that i was winning the best players . Even after suffering defeat initailly i nerver got discouraged.

Unfortunately, there  were no chess journals then in my county. I remembered the day i stumbled over a chess journal which analyzed Deep Blue vs Kasparov around 1995/96. And that journal became my only study guide!

While in the university in 1999 (Unamdi Azikiwe Univerity Nigeria), i became one of the best and was greatly feared and admired by the chess community. I represented my university in inter- university chess tourneys. I won the award for the univeristy best chess player 2001 and 2002 and also a very prestigous 2^nd place in the Kings tournament (2002 ) in Onithsa , Nigeria. Right now i only play chess for fun and relaxation.

I even caught the attentions of one of my department’s  lecturers who noticed my brillance in academics and later found out that i was a chess player. He was a chess player/lover too. Most times then i used to go to his house on weekends to play rounds of chess with him.

Now, i am 32 years old, married with a 7 months old son and still playing the game i love most ‘’CHESS’’. I look forward to the day that i will introduce my son to the game of chess.

With the advent of internet, playing chess is now easier for me as i do not have to go clubing to play chess anymore. I have great pleasure playing in Chesshere.com, one site i consider the best in online chess.

This story is inspiring... i had to read it about two or three times over. Especially the part about chess journal and looking forward to teaching his son! It really is a good article.
