The above position occurred in a tournament for the championship of Romania. White resigned, seeing tht his king cud not reach the square of the pawn. But, although he could not save his queen, white should have played on and might not have lost. If so, how wud u have proceeded?-

without Question, resign.. no matter what white does after QxB, its over , white moves his King , black plays A5- A4. If he takes the pawn then PxP , . In any event, Game over for white... wouuld love to see how Queen got pinned!!!!-

Sorry Maria. The game can be drawn, provided u see the neat trick !-

4United  maria202011-03-27 13:38:31
White plays h2-h4!, I have not looked all the way but this is a possiliblilty-

One scenario could be :1. pxp pxp 2. Kf2..BxQ then Ke1,d2,c1, cutting off the pawn. Black will see this and bring its king along with the pawn. White parks the king on a1,b2. Once forced to a1 it can advance the h pawn which the bishop must take, then stalemate.-

exto is correct ... BxQ loses a tempo but is forced because 2 Kf2 mobilises the queen to attack the a-pawn ... so the black a-pawn gets to a2 in 4 without support, while the white K reaches b2 in 5 ... black\'s K and B can\'t force the white king out of a1-

nice one, blue ... are you playing mind games with Mind Readers?-

8India  BlueScorpion2011-03-27 17:23:30
#4) sorry Maria, wrong move-

9India  BlueScorpion2011-03-27 17:31:51
exto, ur once again, right, congratz. 1)bxa5 bxa5 2)Kf2 Bxf3. At this point white loses if he plays 3)Kxf3. Right move is Ke3 and park the king on a1. Draw!-

Once again a tournament game. Edward Lasker in white. His move. He plays 1)f5. Black replies with 1)...h6. 2)f4 f6.And white resigns. The famous master Ossip Bernstein had been watching the game.He says to Lasker with a smile * u will be very unhappy to learn tht just one move ago u had a won game*. HOW?-

13Europian  cc13741628192011-03-27 21:45:55
hm ... 2 f6 gxf6 3 f4 ... whatever black\'s third move, 4 g5 wins ... ?-

14Europian  cc13741628192011-03-28 00:23:47
(1...f6 2 h6 gxh6 3 f4 and 4 g5 doesn\'t look better for black but is harder eg 3...Kd4 5 g5 hxg5 6 fxg5 Ke5 7 g6 or 5...Ke5 6 g6 hxg6 7 fxg6 )-

15Europian  cc13741628192011-03-28 00:36:04
white to move and win ... but how? ... shame we can\'t animate the solutions to these puzzles ... this one had me walking round in circles making cuckoo noises for two days ...

Ignore tht FEN line. Black cannot take the pawn but has to play 5)...Ke5 6)gxh6 Kf6 7)Kc2! - ZUGZWANG! Black king has to move and as the h5 pawn keeps it away from g6,the h6 pawn queens in 2 moves!-

18India  BlueScorpion2011-03-28 00:57:22
#15)oh my! its going to take a lot of moves!-

19Europian  cc13741628192011-03-28 02:02:39
hm ... how many\'s a lot?-

20Europian  cc13741628192011-03-28 02:04:10
i\'ll stick it in a new forum cos i think the thread\'s getting confusing -

21England  cc1422628553ChessHere Moderator2011-03-28 04:18:00
Is it as easy as 1.Rd1...Kf4 2.Kd6 or 1...Pd6 2.RxP. Once it`s KR v K it`s all over....I think.-

22Europian  cc13741628192011-03-28 07:14:36
moving the pawn backwards just makes it harder-

23India  BlueScorpion2011-03-28 09:28:59
its going to take about 20 moves.-
