Chess quotes on the game page work their way into one\'s memory, but do they improve one\'s play?

Do you want to discuss them?

Is any your Open Sesame?

Cast your eye down the page and let us know what you think.

I will post some together here and open blogs for one or two.

Bobby Fischer: That\'s what Chess is all about. One day you give your opponent a lesson, the next day he gives you one! - I am waiting for my day to come. -

I like that one. But it is so true, you can really take an opponent to school one game and then next, well, good night Irene-

@13,14 Nice quote, HenriDeToi, but I bet you could beat Federer at chess and Kasparov at tennis.

\'Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.\'

Last night, I dreamed that I beat Kasparov at chess and then I kicked Federer\'s butt at tennis. Then I woke up. -

How about a chessic pun by Fred Reinfeld (great chess writer, simple and easy to follow) \"The pin is mightier than the sword\"-

\'That\'s what Chess is all about. One day you give your opponent a lesson, the next day he gives you one!\'

- Bobby Fischer / HenriDeToi

\'Look at Garry Kasparov. After he loses, invariably he wins the next game. He just kills the next guy. That\'s something that we have to learn to be able to do.\'

\'Chess is an incredibly emotional game. If everything around you is harmonious, when you are feeling good, you are in a creative mood. If something is disturbing you and you are in a bad mood, then it is difficult to be creative. So you have to create the right atmosphere.\'

- Vladimir Kramnik

My personal favourite chess quote.

Whoever sees no other aim in the game than that of
giving checkmate to one\'s opponent will never become a good Chess player.

I like Ben Franklin\'s quote that chess is more than an idle amusement, rather, that there are certain skills to be acquired and sharpened within the game. Hence, no chess game shall require bets to keep things interesting. (That isn\'t word for word, just my best recollection of it :p )-

\'A freeing move in a position in which development has not been carried far always proves illusory, and vice versa, a move which does not come at all in the category of freeing moves can, given a surplus of tempi to our credit, lead to a very free game.\'

- Nimzowitsch

just noticed the bit that says, \'can, given a surplus of tempi to our credit, lead to\'.

Dan Heisman: You have to lose your fear of a rating before you can become that rating.

Is there a subconscious fear of a higher rating ? Do your inner demons stop you becoming 1,2,300 pts higher ? It would be difficult to cleanse a phobia.

\'Every month I look through some ten thousand games, so not as to miss any new ideas and trends.\'

- Vladimir Kramnik

Not on the game page, but a cool chess quote.

Reminds me of something Nigel Short said while he was commentating on the candidates last year. He said he had an app that kept him up to date on all the new games played the previous day which he studied every day.....before he gets out of bed in the morning.-

I still wonder about this one.

\'The great master places a Knight at e5; mate follows by itself.\'

I think Tartakower died before algebraic notation began-

Interesting one.

So that deepens the mystery. Who\'s the best master, and what\'s the secret of Ne5?

'Chess is mental torture.'

- Garry Kasparov.

I suppose if it isn't, you aren't playing.

I ticked this one, among others:

'When you lose, you really feel a sense of self. You actually feel that you are being taken apart, rather than just your pieces.'
