\"I say old chap what do you think of these damn continental Italian chappies coming over here with their cheating ways ? They`ll all be doing it if we dont watch out\"-

150Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-21 14:40:31
It is wrong to paint everyone with the same brush. There are cheaters an honest people scattered all around the planet as well as dirty and clean players.-

Well, thats the brief history of diving as we know it. It was imported to this country by, it`s alledged, Kevin Kegan who had a spell abroard at Hamburg `77-80 where he learned to dive.
The Italian game of the `60 and`70s was a slow, dull, uninteresting one of possession and defensive play. 1-0 home wins and 0-0 away draws were the heights of their ambition, and the reults in their leagues were completely saturated in the above results. As to the theatrical calling of the players........and I wont mention the widespread corruption of game fixing in Italy...honest.
So when you wonder why players roll around like comic opera figures in mock death throws then maybe thats the word you are looking for. Operatic.

...thereby ruining all the English sense of fair play -

English sense of fair play? Have u ever heard about Sir Robert William Robson?
The entire career of a player he has not received any yellow cards, not to mention the red!
As for the sample of \"fair play\" I would have got a team Canada hockey 1972.

I know you grow your own tomatoes, Henri, but do you say \'tom-ay-to\' or \'tom-ar-to\'?-

155Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-22 08:28:21
I say: Tomate.-

156Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-22 09:26:06
Kai2011; I am the first to admit that there were no angels on the Canadian hockey team of 1972. But neither were the USSR team who resorted to kicking with their skates. Does Boris Mikhailov ring a bell?-

Bobby Robson was distinguished manager as well with Ipswich Town, then the continent and then England where in 1990 we lost in the semi-finals to Germany.....on penaltys.

No yellow or red cards in his playing career but when he played there were no yellow or red cards. Going in the refs book you had to do something really bad and getting sent off made the news.

Dont bother falling over when you had a slide tackle coming in. If you didn`t jump over the slide then it was your own fault. Push the ball and jump....unless the tackler got the ball first.

158Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-22 11:47:09
What you are telling us is that there is no more fair play in England than anywhere else, but no less, I might add. -

159England  cc1422628553ChessHere Moderator2014-07-23 06:48:34
When I started watching football you could barge the keeper into the net with the ball. To be safe he had to ground the ball by kneeling down and holding the ball to the ground.
Tackling from behind beacme dangerous with certain players having reputations as choppers. That was banned
A certain team discovered that when they went a goal up they would pass the ball back to the keeper at every oppotunity to waste time. That was banned, you cant pass back to the keeper and have him pick it up.With more and more non physical rules diving was an accident waiting to happen. Just a touch in the back and it`s like they`ve had a 1000 volts....but the laws say you cant be physical except shoulder to shoulder.
All that said and diving being an art form it`s reached it`s peak and in decline now the refs are less inclined to give penalties and the slow motion cameras that are at every ground.

I cant imagine what hockey was like befor headgear.

160Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-23 08:00:55
Before headgear in hockey, the players had more respect for their opponents and the sticks were on the ice where they should be. Now the players have to make their way like through the bushes. The way the game is played now; if players wore the protection they did in the sixties, there would be casualties. -

Shh! CSKA Moscow\'s owner Yevgeny Giner fears this could cost Russia the 2018 World Cup. The first three clubs finished in the Ukrainian league last season.
