White to play

Black has just played ...Be7-d6, the sort of move associated with bad nerves. He was under some pressure on the kingside but his position was basically sound. After his move White will either win at once or his pressure will be dissipated. Not surprisingly, White is winning. How did the game conclude?

Solution on July 23, 2014.

Good luck and enjoy!!!

Very good puzzle my friend! After: 1.Rxg7?! - I think that the black will wean the attack after: 1...Bxd4! For this I suggest we can win this: 1.Bxf6! After: 1...gxf6 (or: 1...Bxg3 2.Bxd8 Rxd8 3.Qxg3 = 1:0) 2.Rxe6!!

You\'ve got a very nice solution there kalimera. It\'s different from the solution that I have in my book. Let me check it first before I can say that it\'s the right/wrong solution. But I can say this to you that you\'ve got a very imaginative mind kalimera which definitely makes you a better player than I am. :) Larry-

I think that both moves (1.Rxg7 and 1,Bxf6) lead to the white win! Georgi! I beg You not to rotate the chessboard - I had a bout of seasickness!

Now the task for those whose rating >>>3000:)

White to play

As kali-mera stated earlier, the solution starts with

1.Bxf6

However on the 2nd move, kali-mera suggested 2.Rxe6

With the help of Fritz8, black could have answered with 2...f5 instead of taking the Rook with fxe6, which as shown by kali-mera easily leads to mate.

2...f5

1-0

Black will be mated: 8...Kg8 (or 8...Kf7 9.Bb3+ Rc4 10.Bxc4+ Bd5 11.Bxd5#) 9.Bb3+ (or 9.Bh7+ Kf7 10.Qg6+ Kf8 11.Qg8#) 9...Rc4 10.Bxc4+ Bd5 11.Bxd5#.

This only shows that there\'s more than one way to win! It takes creativity, good imagination and patience to achieve our goal. Until next time.

Garry Kasparov in \'How Life Imiates Chess\' says chess problems are easy, because you know there are answers. They are even easier when you let kali-mera work them out or wait for LayZ Style\'s solutions. I will tuck away the key move Bxf6 (and preceding ...Be7-d6) for actual games later, thanks.-
