Seems stalemate itself has a complicated history and even this century stalemate has been seen as logically a win (\'the ultimate zugzwang\') for the side administering it, the main objections being aesthetic. In which case, a chess variant awarding a win for stalemate but prohibiting checks and checkmate might satisfy both logical and aesthetic objections.

Do you do answers? How do you think it would compare with Losing Chess as a bit of fun? Or any other variant as a serious game?
