Chess represents the perfect combination of hobby and education

by albin1e4

Chess represents the perfect combination of hobby and education. Since I began to take a serious interest in chess, I spend much of my free time playing correspondence games or reading about the history of players or tournaments.

I crossed over from knowing the moves to being a chess geek when I discovered chess books and sets on eBay. At first, I won a collection of books from the 1950s, then a years worth of Chess Life. Obsession began to set in when I won some New In Chess magazines. I was hooked and now I eagerly await the mailman each day to see what goodies he will deliver.

The obsession grew when I found various chess web sites and software programs such as ChessBase. Suddenly I had a hobby that had taken a hold of my inner soul. I couldn't wait to log in and see if it was my turn to move. I began to educate myself on the openings using chess engines to guide me through the critical beginning of a game. I also started to run my PGN files through ... Read more >>>

Chess is a unique game

by singahitam

Chess is a unique game. I started to play since 16, but not too serious. However, when I was in my University, there was a chess club where there were only few members interested to join it, probably people did not like to think for the strategy. During the annual general meeting at the time, I was stunned when two of the members play the chess without looking at the chessboard, wow!I felt amazed. At that time I was thinking that they have planned on the movement, however when I was coming to know them closely, I tried to play with them and the man did not look at the board while I did. Wow! I was defeated easily. Started from that moment, I began to find the books, and surf the internet to find all the chess games played since 1700. And until now, I can afford to buy chess book because it is too expensive here. So what I've been practising is to surf, find the best game, join tournament, analyze my game, analyze using chessmaster or f ... Read more >>>

that chess is a game, it is sport or even art

by Nortess

What  is the chess for me?

They say, that chess is a game, it is sport or even art. I think, everyone agrees with this. But for each of chess players it is also something very personal.

I also have my very special feelings for chess…

For me my dad was and always will be in my memory as the great chess player and owing to him my first acquaintance to chess happened earlier, than I began to walk. Chess figures were for me in the childhood the most favorite toys: serious, allocated with own characters. Not for dolls, but for them I sewed beautiful clothes.

chess - the best game ever invented

by moneting

As a young child chess fascinated me on the seemingly endless combinations the game provided its players.  In school it was a tool to test my mental capabilities against my peers, and a social vehicle. As an adult chess still functions socially, and I marveled at how this game was used to test man against computer with Deep Blue.  Unequivocally it is the best board game ever invented.  It has functioned as a means to resolve disputes and has brought people together.  Finally, Chess represents pure enjoyment; the thrill of a winning combination, surprises from your opponent, and lessons learned allows chess to the best game ever invented

To whomever this may concern, Hi my name is William and I am from Canberra A.C.T., Australia. Chess is becoming my world all I ever think about is playing chess, I can't describe the feeling I get when I think about what chess means to me, The only word that comes to mind is Universal. Universal in the way that millions play the game, Universal in that there are so many possible combinations one can come up with in any given situation even though only few are recommended. I hope while your reading this you are feeling the same way I do because if not, than I am clearly crazy
