No. Combat is trained reflexes taking over. You have to be able to act instictively and correctly first time, or you are dead. That is what all the years of training are for. With RTC that is closer to the truth. But with CC or OTB you have time to consider alternatives. In combat, it is said. "When the first shot is fired, all plans go out the window. Well, not so sure I agree with the stryker086's analogy - think too long in a sword fight and you're dead!!!, but definetely agree with the message that the topic sentence is trying to convey. I also agree with Marum about chess being instinctive, but only for real time/blitz chess. The problem or limitation to this way of looking at chess is that the only way to develop these instincts is by carefully thinking through each and all of your moves as often as possible whenever and where ever the opportunity arises! It is only by going through this careful and in-depth thought process that one obtains and hones his or her chess instincts .... sort of a catch 22 situation if you like :) Happy hunting on the chess board to all - Paddy

In agreement with Marum. For five minute or less chess, you have to have had training and a bountiful subconcious, which are what we can properly call instincts. You fight like you trained and there is always some error possible.
