In 30 minutes we\'ll know, but I think it unlikely that Argentina will lose in this way. Their time is much more cautious than Brazil, and they are not under so much pressure - let\'s face it, they were psychologically demolished before being tactically overwhelmed.-

The Brazilian press has been echoing the infamous \"Macaranazo\" a lot:

I think the detail that makes me realise the dimension of the event the most is...

«Brazil\'s white shirts with blue collars that were worn in the final game were, in the wake of the defeat, criticised for being \"unpatriotic\", with pressure to change the colours. In 1953 a competition was held by the newspaper Correio da Manhã to design a new strip, with the rule being that it must incorporate the colours of the national flag. Eventually, the competition was won by Aldyr Garcia Schlee, a newspaper illustrator, who came up with the design of yellow shirt with green trim, blue shorts and white socks that was first used in March 1954 against Chile, and has been used ever since.»

(easier to read in Portuguese, but hey)

At least some/most countries have their own strip/colours. We dont. We play in any old crap that the FA get the most money for in sponsorship. We won the cup in `66 in a nice red outfit. Then we play in an all white strip and look like a bunch of poseurs copying Real Madrid. Why cant we have a kit like Germanys red and black outfit?-

122Portugal  viriol2014-07-11 23:20:04
Warning: Mentioning England in the cup of \'66 awakens rage in every Portuguese man, and makes words like \"robbed\" very likely to come out of our mouths...

That being said, interesting final. Seems like the Brazilians will be supporting their rivals... But I still think Bayer... I mean, Germany, has the best team.

Interestingly, if Germany wins, for the second time in a row the World Champion will be based on a club managed by Guardiola... Makes you think about his value, hu?

123Canada  dsuttlesChessHere Moderator2014-07-13 02:26:10
Isn\'t the white strip on loan from Leeds United?

Anger management therapy for Viriol -

124Canada  dsuttlesChessHere Moderator2014-07-13 02:32:20
Who do you fancy in the final, Viriol? Germany or Messi?-

125England  cc1422628553ChessHere Moderator2014-07-13 11:01:02
The mythical Réal Madrid team of 1960 with
Di Stefano and Puskás. Mythical because in those days you only had black and white news reel footage from another planet called the continent....and continental football.
Black armbands were worn in the semi-finals by Brazil, or was it Argentina in memory of the recently deceased Di Stefano.
I hope Argentina go one or two goals up.

I hope Your prognosis never come true!

127Canada  cc14226285672014-07-13 13:33:04
In 1966 I was 20 years old and got to see most world cup games.Nobody was \"robbed\"and England clearly beat Portugal. In 1966 my friend Viriol wasn\'t even born yet.
Germany clearly must be the favorite in today\'s game. The Dutch finish third. The only team to go undefeated in regulation time.Doesn\'t seem fair somehow. The Dutch jinx continues.

128Russian  kai20112014-07-13 14:01:20
* 127\"The only team to go undefeated in regulation time.\"
Which team, that were undefeated in 90 minutes, you mean? There were many.

129Canada  dsuttlesChessHere Moderator2014-07-13 18:54:46
Lionel Messi did not touch the ball in the penalty area during the 120 minutes against Holland.-

130Netherlands  Koning WillemII2014-07-15 23:01:31
Well back home again, it was great in Brazil but we all feel a bit sad.
i think we should have done better against
Germany and losing by penalties has happened to us so many times
But still we are all proud, third place was much more than we expected.

131Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-16 19:48:25
They should change the rules so that the team wins without those shootouts. This should be a team sport and they should play overtime until someone scores or they drop. Too much luck also goes into those shootouts. The goalies have absolutely no chance except if they happen to guess it right or the shooter shoots directly at them. -

132Russian  kai20112014-07-16 19:58:56
Already was!!! The lot...-

133Canada  cc14226285672014-07-16 21:22:56
Although shootouts have been a part of soccer for quite some time, they are almost universally hated by fans and players alike. This is because a shootout is essentially a last resort in order to end a soccer match. Most fans and players would rather continue until a winner emerges, but sadly the modern game has been forever altered by the constraints of television time slots.-

134Canada  dsuttlesChessHere Moderator2014-07-17 13:50:29
A shootout ruins a match, but going beyond 120 minutes could derail the tournament. Argentina had a day less than Germany to rest for the final and played 30 minutes more in their semi. If they had gone beyond 120 minutes against Holland, I don\'t think they would have been able to do it again in the final.

Make the games shorter and the goals bigger, as some USA fans say?

135Russian  kai20112014-07-17 14:16:40
The shedule of championship was not made for special teams! According more goals: after 90 minutes - 9 players and field less(10 metres length and width), each 10-15 minutes same procedure! I think this will work!

136England  cc1422628553ChessHere Moderator2014-07-17 17:33:21
The amount of shots that go over the bar is criminally liable. The last kick of the game in the final, Messi`s free kick was, if I had my way treasonable and he should have been taken away by the junta been made to eat his boots on telivision, and serve penance cleaning public urinals.

If there is a draw at the end of 120 mins add up all the shots that are wasted over the bar and the least wins it. That might stop them kicking the ball at the goal like `Hail Marys`.

137Russian  kai20112014-07-19 09:27:18
Well! We may hang up the players ( Messi and so on) who missed their chances... Would You feel better than?

138Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-19 11:58:42
Soccer balls sometimes take weird trajectories once up in the air. Sometimes they rise or curve unnexpectantly. - In any event, Messi, Ronaldo and all of these football players are filthy rich-

139Russian  kai20112014-07-19 15:31:34
Once upon a time... Many tales started with this words! How much finished happy?

140Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-20 01:13:46
If you\'re not happy when you\'re poor; you won\'t be happy when you\'re rich. -

Perhaps there should be a patron saint of wierd projectory free kicks, then a small sign could be made before the kick is taken so as to alert everybody that the kicker is basically punting the ball towards the middle of the goal where the keeper is standing and praying that the ball will `do something` and make the keeper look silly. The only drawback here is that the kicker wont be able to claim that his `genius` kick was planned.
Messis` last kick of the game would have needed a 30 mtr swerve from the patron saint after he kicked it. This/these worse than zero percentage hit and hope shots are not team work but a try at immortality. If it had maybe hit a pidgeon or found a thermal and been diverted in then the goal would be shown for decades as the `Messi miracle goal`
He would of course have gone on to score a `pre ordained` hatrick and Germanys lucky streak exposed.

Last kick of the game. What would you do ?
1. Drive the ball into the penalty area hoping for a mistake/header. 10% chance.
2. Just put your faith in the almighty and lauch it out of the ground. -7500000000000000% chance.

The Italian Pirlo was head and shoulders the most skillful player at the world cup.
This is a proper kick....awesome

What do I know about football I am an ice hockey fan. After all, I\'m Canadian

- Just one question: Why do football players dive and fall to the ground as if they were shot through the heart by a high powered rifle then rise from the dead and play as if nothing happened

145Canada  dsuttlesChessHere Moderator2014-07-20 13:56:14
I went to a fight once and an ice hockey match broke out.-

146Canada  cc14226285672014-07-20 14:30:45
Canadians don\'t say \"match\",we say \"game\".A hockey game.Being Canadian,you should know this.-

147Canada  HenriDeToi2014-07-20 15:19:40
- Even though I am Canadian, I am against violence in hockey as in any sport. But I also resent fakers in any sport. At least, nost hockey players are not divers, and those that do are frown upon.-
