Biography & Major Career Milestones
Gavrilescu was born in Craiova, Romania, where his youth chess development yielded strong international and national tournament results. In 2011, he secured the silver medal at the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-8 category. He followed this with a bronze medal in the Under-10 category at the 2013 European Youth Chess Championship. He was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2017 and won the Romanian Under-20 National Junior Championship in 2018.
Gavrilescu earned the International Master (IM) title in 2019 and won the Balkan Individual Chess Championship in 2020. FIDE officially ratified his Grandmaster (GM) title in 2023, making him one of the youngest active Grandmasters in Romania.
At the national level, Gavrilescu has consistently contended for top honors. In March 2022, he tied for second place in the Romanian Chess Championship behind winner Mircea-Emilian Pârligras, scoring 6.5/9. In February 2023, he took the silver medal on tiebreaks in the national championship, finishing behind Kirill Shevchenko with a 6.5/9 score. In February 2025, playing in Craiova, Gavrilescu won his first national title, winning the 91st Romanian Chess Championship with 7/9.
In May 2022, Gavrilescu participated as a wildcard in the Superbet Rapid & Blitz Poland (Warsaw), a leg of the Grand Chess Tour. Despite being the lowest-rated player in the field, he secured rapid draws against Wesley So and Radosław Wojtaszek, and defeated Viswanathan Anand, Kirill Shevchenko, Anton Korobov, and Wojtaszek in the blitz portion. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Gavrilescu plays a classical and universal style, relying on solid positional foundations and concrete calculation. Rather than initiating highly speculative early king attacks, he prioritizes healthy development, king safety, and structured pawn play. He often plays with space advantages or isolated queen's pawn setups, utilizing strategic minor-piece exchanges to transition into favorable middlegames.
Defensively, Gavrilescu remains patient and structurally resilient in inferior positions. He is highly capable in technical endings, demonstrating competence in active rook and pawn structures, as well as minor-piece endings utilizing the bishop pair or managing knight-versus-bishop imbalances.
