Michael Adams is an English chess grandmaster. Born on 17 November 1971, he represents the English chess federation (ENG). He was awarded the International Master title in 1987 and the Grandmaster title in 1989. His career-high FIDE classical rating of 2761 was achieved in September 2013, which is the highest rating ever achieved by an English player. Historically peaking at world No. 4, Adams is a world championship candidate, a nine-time British Chess Champion, and has been a premier representative for England in Olympiads and international team events for over three decades.

Adams was born in Truro, Cornwall, UK. His chess development progressed rapidly under the guidance of local coaches, including Shaun Taulbut. At the age of nine, he competed in the Cornwall County Championships, winning the Under-9, Under-13, Under-15, and Under-18 sections, famously playing the final rounds of the Under-15 and Under-18 tournaments simultaneously due to a schedule clash.

He secured his final International Master norm at the 1987 British Chess Championship, becoming the world's youngest IM at the time at fifteen. Two years later, in 1989, he earned his Grandmaster title at seventeen and won his first British Chess Championship. He subsequently won the British title eight more times (1997 joint with Matthew Sadler, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2025). His 2016 victory with a score of 10/11 tied the tournament record.

In the World Chess Championship cycles, Adams was a frequent Candidate. He reached the semifinals of the FIDE World Championship knockouts in 1997, 1999, and 2000. In 2004, he reached the final of the FIDE World Chess Championship in Tripoli, losing to Rustam Kasimdzhanov in the rapid tie-breaks after drawing the classical portion of the match.
