Semen Vladimirovich Khanin is a Russian-born Grandmaster who competes under the FIDE (FID) flag. Born on May 23, 1999, in Novosibirsk, Russia, Khanin achieved the International Master (IM) title in 2015 and was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2023. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2597 in March 2026. A highly accomplished open tournament and collegiate competitor, Khanin has represented top-tier university chess programs in the United States while maintaining an active professional tournament schedule.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Khanin began playing chess at the age of five in Novosibirsk. Throughout his youth, he won multiple Russian Youth Championships across various age divisions and was mentored by FIDE Trainer Artur Gabrielian, as well as grandmasters Dmitry Kryakvin and Dmitry Bocharov. His early international achievements include securing a bronze medal at the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-12 category and a team bronze medal at the 2015 World Youth Under-16 Olympiad.

Khanin earned his International Master title in 2015. He secured his second GM norm at the Moscow Open-A in January 2019, where he took the lead in the sixth round. In September 2020, he won the Alexander Panchenko Memorial Open in Chelyabinsk on tiebreaks ahead of grandmasters Dmitry Kokarev and Maksim Chigaev, recording a tournament performance rating of 2734.

After moving to the United States to study Data Science at Texas Tech University (TTU) in Lubbock, Texas, Khanin established himself as a dominant competitor in American open and collegiate tournaments. In 2022, he was a joint winner of both the US National Open in Las Vegas, scoring 7.5/9, and the 50th Annual World Open in Philadelphia, where he tied for first with 7/9. His third and final GM norm was earned in September 2022, leading to the official Grandmaster title ratification by FIDE in 2023. He continued his success in major open tournaments by winning the Chicago Open in May 2025.

As a collegiate competitor, Khanin played on the Texas Tech "Knight Raiders" chess team. He helped lead the university's A-team to first place in the 2023 Kasparov Chess Foundation (KCF) University Cup and spearheaded the team's victories at the 2023 Texas Chess Collegiate Super Finals and the 2024 Southwest Collegiate Team Championship.
