Biography & Major Career Milestones
Zaven Andriasian established himself as one of Armenia's most promising junior chess talents in the late 1990s, participating in the European Youth Chess Championship (Under-10 division) in 1998.
His international breakthrough came in 2005 when he won the European Youth Chess Championship for Under-16 in Herceg Novi, a performance that secured his International Master (IM) title. In 2006, Andriasian achieved his career-defining junior victory by winning the World Junior Chess Championship in Yerevan at the age of 17. By winning this prestigious Under-20 title, FIDE automatically awarded him the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2006. In the same year, he won the silver medal at the European Under-18 Championship.
Following his entry into the senior ranks, Andriasian secured several significant tournament victories:
- 2010 Russian Cup Final: In November 2010, Andriasian won the Russian Cup Final by defeating Grandmaster Artyom Timofeev in the second game of the match.
- 2012 Groningen Chess Festival: In December 2012, he shared first place at the Groningen Chess Festival alongside Alexander Kovchan and Sipke Ernst.

He is also the author of multiple acclaimed opening monographs published by New In Chess and Thinkers Publishing, including Winning with the Najdorf Sicilian (2013), The English Attack against the Taimanov Sicilian (2015), The Modernized Slav Defense (2026), and Andriasian's Tactical Workout (2026).

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Zaven Andriasian's playing style is characterized by dynamic complexity, tactical sharpness, and deep theoretical grounding. He is a prototypical product of the modern computer era, relying on concrete calculation and hyper-accurate home preparation.
- King Safety and Sharpness: Andriasian frequently welcomes double-edged positions featuring opposite-side castling. His extensive research into the Sicilian Defense, particularly from both sides of the English Attack, reflects his high comfort level under mutual kingside storms.
- Material Imbalances: In the middlegame, Andriasian is highly adept at utilizing exchange sacrifices to dismantle his opponent's pawn structure or to establish dominant minor pieces on central outposts. He also displays a strong affinity for utilizing the bishop pair in open or semi-open positions to exert long-term pressure.
- Endgame Conversion: While highly tactical, Andriasian possesses high technical competence in simplified endings. He is particularly proficient in technical rook-and-pawn endgames and minor-piece battles (such as knight-versus-bishop endings). He excels at defending marginally worse or structurally compromised endgames, utilizing precise pawn breaks to generate active counterplay rather than settling for passive defense.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Andriasian is an authority on opening theory, having written major analytical works on the Sicilian Defense and the Slav Defense. His choices are sharp, theoretically demanding, and strategically ambitious.
1. As White
Andriasian is primarily a 1. e4 player, steering the game into highly analytical and tactical mainlines.
-
Italian Game (Giuoco Piano): He frequently employs positional Italian setups, avoiding immediate tactical skirmishes in favor of slow, maneuvering play:
-
Sicilian Defense (English Attack vs. Taimanov): As a leading expert on this line, Andriasian plays the sharp English Attack, aiming to castle queenside and launch a swift kingside pawn storm:
-
Sicilian Defense (Rossolimo Variation): Against the modern 1...Nc6 lines, Andriasian frequently sidesteps open mainlines with the Rossolimo:
2. As Black
As Black, Andriasian adopts uncompromising, highly theoretical lines aimed at fighting for the initiative.
-
Sicilian Najdorf: His primary weapon against 1.e4. In his theoretical writings, he recommends the classical 6...e5 push against most of White's 6th-move options. Against the highly critical 6.Bg5, he champions the sharp Poisoned Pawn Variation:
-
Slav Defense: Against 1.d4, Andriasian employs the Slav Defense as his primary solid barrier. He frequently plays the Carlsbad Variation of the Czech Slav, transitioning into highly theoretical structures:
