Overview

Andy Austin Woodward (born May 2, 2010) is an American chess grandmaster and prodigy. Representing the United States, he achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2024 at the age of 13 years, 8 months, and 28 days. As of May 2026, he holds a FIDE classical rating of 2635, which also represents his career-high rating (first reached in April 2026). His FIDE rapid rating is 2521 and his blitz rating is 2496. Woodward is primarily a tournament player who has quickly emerged as one of the premier young talents globally, achieving major successes in international open and invitational tournaments.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Frisco, Texas, Woodward learned chess at age five and developed rapidly, achieving the National Master title in 2020, followed by FIDE Master in 2021 and International Master in 2022. He has been a frequent member of the All-America Chess Team from 2020 onward.

Woodward secured his first IM norm at the 2021 North American Junior Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. He completed the title requirements in summer 2022 after securing four more IM norms in Novi Sad, Serbia, where he took clear first place and two second-place finishes across three tournaments.
