O hráči
Overview
Aditya Mittal (born September 19, 2006) is an Indian chess grandmaster representing the All India Chess Federation (IND). He has steadily progressed through the FIDE ranks, achieving the Candidate Master (CM) title in 2014, the International Master (IM) title in 2019, and the Grandmaster (GM) title in January 2023. Known as a highly calculation-oriented and tactically sharp tournament competitor, Mittal reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2624 in October 2025. He has established himself as a prominent open-tournament player and an active competitor in prestigious European leagues, including the German Chess Bundesliga.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Medhauli, Madhya Pradesh, Aditya Mittal began playing chess at the age of five. He quickly distinguished himself in junior events, accumulating several national and continental medals. His notable early achievements include a bronze medal at the Asian Schools Under-7 Open in 2012, a rapid gold medal at the Asian Youth Under-8 Open in 2014, a silver medal at the Asian Youth Under-10 Open in 2015, and a silver medal at the Asian Youth Under-16 Open in 2016.
During a crucial phase of his early development, Mittal faced severe physical adversity. Suffering from multiple bone fractures, he was frequently bound to a wheelchair during major tournaments. Despite these constraints, his competitive output remained highly prolific. He pursued his International Master title with a succession of impressive results, earning his first IM norm at the IIFLW Mumbai International (2018–2019) while gaining over 113 Elo points. He secured his second IM norm immediately afterward at the Parsvnath International in Delhi (2019) and completed his title requirements by earning a third norm at the Aeroflot Open A in Moscow (2019) at the age of 12 years and 5 months.
Mittal’s pursuit of the Grandmaster title was characterized by equally rapid development:
- He earned his maiden GM norm at the Serbia Open Masters in July 2021, scoring 7/9 and winning three consecutive games against grandmasters, including GM Evgeny Postny.
- He secured his second GM norm at the 2nd El Llobregat Open in Spain in December 2021.
- He clinched his third and final GM norm at the Serbia Open Masters in 2022.
- He crossed the mandatory 2500 live Elo rating threshold on December 6, 2022, during the 3rd El Llobregat Open. A draw in the sixth round against Spain's No. 1 GM Francisco Vallejo Pons pushed his live rating to 2500.6, making him India's 77th Grandmaster. The title was officially ratified by FIDE in early 2023.
Subsequent major tournament victories have reinforced his standing among elite juniors:
- In October 2022, Mittal won the fourth leg of the MPL Indian Chess Tour on tiebreak, qualifying for the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.
- In July 2023, he won the Astana Zhuldyzdary Open in Kazakhstan, finishing ahead of veteran grandmasters Alexander Moiseenko and Evgeny Alekseev.
- In March 2024, Mittal won the 125th Anniversary of Werder Bremen Jubilee Tournament, finishing undefeated with a score of 7/9. This performance generated a 2713 tournament rating and pushed his classical rating past the 2600 mark for the first time.
- He has also represented his generation in elite rapid events, notably competing in the Aimchess Rapid 2022 and holding draws against top-tier grandmasters such as Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the Sharjah Masters 2025.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- German Chess Bundesliga (2024–2026): Mittal plays for SV Werder Bremen. Operating in one of the strongest club leagues in the world, he has routinely competed against world-class opposition, contributing critical wins, such as his strategic victory over GM Bobby Cheng.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Mittal’s playing style is defined by concrete, engine-era calculation, typical of the modern generation of Indian grandmasters. He operates with an aggressive, initiative-driven approach, showing great resourcefulness in asymmetric positions.
- King Safety and Attacking Play: Mittal frequently welcomes sharp attacking races, exhibiting high accuracy when calculating direct kingside onslaughts. A prime example of this is his round-eight victory against GM Bharath Subramaniyam at the 31st Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival (2025), where he dismantled a Sicilian Najdorf setup with energetic piece coordination and an exchange sacrifice to strip the black king of its pawn cover.
- Material Imbalances: He has a strong preference for active piece play over static material safety. He willingly sacrifices minor material—specifically exchange sacrifices or pawn structures—to seize the initiative.
- Defensive Resilience: In worse positions, Mittal relies on active counter-attacks rather than passive defense. During the Sharjah Masters 2025, his resilience allowed him to successfully hold a draw against top seed GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov by maintaining highly active defensive resources.
- Endgame Conversion: He possesses strong technical skills in converting small positional pluses, particularly in knight-versus-bishop and structured rook endgames. This strategic maturity was evident even as a junior, as demonstrated in his endgame victory against GM Andrei Deviatkin during his first IM-norm campaign.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Mittal maintains a sophisticated and theoretically dense opening repertoire, leaning heavily on positional closed games with White and double-edged, counter-attacking options with Black.
1. As White
Mittal relies on 1.d4 and 1.c4 as his primary weapons, although he occasionally plays 1.e4 to test his opponent's preparation in open lines.
- Queen's Gambit & Catalan Setups: Against 1...d5, Mittal frequently plays classical Catalan and Queen's Gambit Declined lines, aiming for long-term pressure based on the light-squared bishop.
- Nimzo-Indian & Queen's Indian Defense: Against 1...Nf6 and 2...e6 setups, Mittal challenges the Nimzo-Indian and the Queen's Indian Defense, occasionally using the Rubinstein or Nimzowitsch variations.
- English Opening: He heavily employs the English Opening to navigate away from heavily analyzed central pawn clashes.
2. As Black
As Black, Mittal seeks unbalanced middlegames that allow him to play for a win with the initiative.
- Against 1.e4: His premier response is the Sicilian Najdorf, leading to highly dynamic and double-edged pawn storms.
- Against 1.d4: Mittal's primary choice is the Nimzo-Indian Defense, where he actively fights for dark-square control. Alternatively, he adopts the solid structures of the Queen's Gambit Declined to neutralize central tension.
