O hráči
Overview
Tomás Valentín Sosa is an Argentine chess grandmaster (GM) born on September 9, 1998, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Representing the Argentine Chess Federation (ARG), he was officially awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2022. Sosa reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2575 in May 2024. Primarily recognized as a highly competitive open tournament player, he is also an accomplished rapid specialist, a national team representative, and an elite-level trainer who notably coached the young Argentine prodigy Faustino Oro during the early years of his historic ascent.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Sosa developed through the competitive Argentine youth circuit, steadily advancing to earn his International Master (IM) title. His international rise gained momentum in September 2019 when he claimed victory in the blitz tournament of the Ciutat de Barcelona Masters, while simultaneously finishing ninth in the main classical event as the highest-ranking IM. In December 2020, Sosa won the La Palma IM tournament in Spain with a dominant score of 7.5/9, finishing 1.5 points clear of the field. This success was followed by a victory at the Open Internacional de Valencia in July 2021.
Following his promotion to Grandmaster in 2022, Sosa won the 1st Iberoamerican Rapid Championship (I Campeonato Iberoamericano de Rápidas) in December 2023 in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, scoring 8.0/9 to edge out second-place GM Alexei Shirov and third-place GM Cristóbal Enríquez Villagra.
Sosa has continued to excel in strong open tournaments, finishing fourth on tiebreaks at the highly competitive Menorca Open in April 2025 ahead of several notable GMs. In April 2026, he repeated this high-level performance at the 5th Menorca Open, sharing first place with an undefeated 7.5/9 score alongside Abhimanyu Mishra, Leon Luke Mendonca, and Li Di, ultimately placing fourth on tiebreak criteria.
In addition to his playing career, Sosa is highly regarded as an opening theorist and coach. He served as the primary trainer for Faustino Oro from the prodigy's early developmental years until early 2025, guiding him toward achieving his historic International Master milestones.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- 45th Chess Olympiad (2024): Represented Argentina on Board 4 in Budapest, Hungary. He contributed critical points to the team, including a victory over Matias Latorre of Paraguay and a solid draw against German Grandmaster Frederik Svane.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Sosa is a technical, universal-style player who relies on deep theoretical preparation, concrete calculation, and positional pressure. He is particularly effective in queenless middlegames and complex endgames, where he combines active piece placement with structured defense.
Sosa demonstrates a flexibility in maintaining dynamic piece activity over static structural perfection, often accepting isolated pawn weaknesses or minor positional compromises if they yield open lines and tactical counterplay. His endgame technique is characterized by highly active king participation and precise rook-and-pawn coordination. A key example of his endgame precision occurred in his game against Dhulipalla Bala Chandra Prasad at the 2019 Gibraltar Masters, where Sosa demonstrated exceptional king-shouldering mechanics and rook maneuverability to convert a complex endgame into a full point.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders

Sosa is primarily an 1.e4 player, utilizing highly structured setups designed to apply long-term positional pressure.
-
Italian Game (Giuoco Piano): Sosa's primary weapon against 1...e5 is the Italian, specifically the Giuoco Pianissimo. He relies on slow, maneuvering setups to control the center:
-
French Defense (Tarrasch Variation): Against 1...e6, Sosa consistently selects the Tarrasch Variation, aiming for a spatial advantage and structured play:
-
Anti-Sicilian Systems: Against the Sicilian, Sosa frequently bypasses main-line open variations in favor of the Rossolimo/Canal-Sokolsky Attack or the Closed Sicilian to restrict Black's counterplay:
2. As Black
Sosa's Black repertoire features asymmetric setups designed to unbalance the position while maintaining structural solidity.
-
Against 1.e4: Sosa utilizes both the Ruy Lopez and the Sicilian Defense. In the Ruy Lopez, he often adopts closed, hypermodern-influenced setups:
In the Sicilian, he relies on the sharp Najdorf Variation for counter-attacking possibilities:
-
Against 1.d4: Against queen's pawn openings, Sosa's primary defensive setup is the Queen's Gambit Declined, with a strong preference for the Ragozin Defense, allowing active piece play in the center:
