Biography & Major Career Milestones
Yahli Sokolovsky was born in Kiryat Ono, Israel. He showed early chess promise and progressed through the national junior ranks, earning the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2020, followed by the International Master (IM) title in 2022. In December 2022, he finished in fourth place in the Israeli Chess Championship.
In January 2024, Sokolovsky achieved a significant milestone at the 51st Rilton Cup in Stockholm, Sweden, scoring 7/9 to finish tied for second place with Yair Parkhov, half a point behind the winner Vitaly Sivuk. This performance secured his third and final Grandmaster norm. He officially crossed the 2500 Elo rating threshold in July 2024, completing the requirements for the FIDE Grandmaster title.
Sokolovsky's breakthrough on the international circuit continued in May 2024, when he won the Budapest Spring Festival on tiebreaks after finishing on a score of 7/9 alongside several other grandmasters. In August 2024, he tied for second place at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting A-Open with a score of 7/9.
In December 2024, Sokolovsky won the 5th El Llobregat Open in Barcelona, Spain. He finished clear first in a strong field with an undefeated score of 8/10, taking home the championship title. In January 2025, he competed in the 42nd Israeli Chess Championship in Eilat. Tied for the lead going into the final round, a draw secured him the silver medal with a score of 6.5/9, finishing just behind Yair Parkhov.
In January 2026, at the age of 19, Sokolovsky claimed his maiden national title by winning the Israeli Chess Championship in Acre outright. He scored 7.5/9 with a tournament performance rating of 2694, which included a critical eighth-round win over second-seeded GM Ido Gorshtein.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- European Team Chess Championship (2025): Represented Israel in Batumi, Georgia. He played for the national team, which also featured Maxim Rodshtein, Avital Boruchovsky, Ido Gorshtein, and Yair Parkhov. His individual results included a draw against GM Giga Quparadze of Georgia and a victory over IM Andrew J. Muir of Scotland.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Sokolovsky is a universal and pragmatic player. One of his defining characteristics as White is his heavy reliance on flank openings, particularly 1.b3, which bypasses deeply analyzed theoretical lines in favor of strategically rich and slower-paced middlegames. This choice reflects a technical approach that prioritizes long-term positional maneuvering over concrete, forced tactical play.
However, Sokolovsky is highly capable of executing sharp tactical calculations when the position demands. This dynamic ability was evident in his critical seventh-round game at the 2024 El Llobregat Open, where he countered Ido Gorshtein’s Sicilian Defense with a direct, energetic kingside attack to secure victory in just 31 moves.
Under the mentorship of legendary Grandmaster Boris Gelfand, Sokolovsky has developed strong technical endgame skills. He excels at grinding out micro-advantages in queenless middlegames and symmetrical structures, demonstrating excellent piece coordination and patience. His defensive capabilities in slightly worse endgames are structurally solid, as he frequently constructs resilient defensive setups when his opponent holds a space advantage.
