About
Overview
Aryan Chopra (born 10 December 2001) is an Indian chess grandmaster representing the Indian Chess Federation (IND). He completed his Grandmaster title requirements in September 2016 at the age of 14 years, 9 months, and 3 days, making him the second-youngest Indian grandmaster at the time behind Parimarjan Negi; FIDE officially conferred the title in 2017. Chopra achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2641 in August 2023. Known primarily as a classical tournament competitor and elite collegiate player, he actively represents the Saint Louis University (SLU) chess team in major national and international events.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Chopra was born in New Delhi, India. He began playing chess at the age of six after an automobile accident left him temporarily housebound. Guided by his first coach, FM Prasenjit Dutta, Chopra quickly demonstrated his aptitude by winning the state-level Delhi Under-7 Championship. He established an early presence in junior tournaments, winning the Under-10 Commonwealth Chess Championship in 2010 and successfully defending the title in 2011.
Chopra earned the title of International Master (IM) in August 2015 after his performance at the Riga Technical University Open, where he finished 6th with an undefeated 6.5/9 score. During the same event, he secured his first Grandmaster (GM) norm. He completed his second GM norm in May 2016 at the 35th Zalakaros Open in Hungary, posting a strong performance against multiple grandmasters. On August 29, 2016, Chopra completed his third and final GM norm in dramatic fashion, defeating Armenian GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan with the Black pieces in the final round of the Abu Dhabi Chess Championship Masters.
To finalize his Grandmaster title requirements, Chopra crossed the Elo 2500 live rating threshold in September 2016 with three consecutive wins at the Dato Arthur Tan International Open in Malaysia. The title was officially ratified by FIDE in March 2017.
Following his title acquisition, Chopra placed third at the 2017 Abu Dhabi Chess Masters with 6.5/9, defeating several high-rated grandmasters. In April 2022, he tied for first place at the Fagernes Chess International in Norway, scoring 7/9 alongside Krishnan Sasikiran. His upward rating trajectory continued through 2023, highlighted by a second-place finish at the Biel Chess Festival Master Tournament Open (MTO) in July with 7.5/10, which pushed his FIDE rating to his career-peak of 2641 in August 2023.
Chopra subsequently enrolled at Saint Louis University, joining their elite collegiate chess program while pursuing a degree in business.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Chopra is a universal player who favors deep strategic planning, structural accuracy, and solid positional principles. True to his preference for classical over-the-board chess, he prioritizes slow, logical piece development and thorough positional analysis.
In his games, Chopra demonstrates a highly solid treatment of king safety, establishing strong defensive fortresses before initiating central play. He is comfortable fighting for space advantages, particularly in classical structures arising from the Sicilian and French systems. He is adept at handling structural vulnerabilities, occasionally accepting minor pawn weaknesses if they offer active piece activity.
Chopra’s defensive resilience is a defining trait; in worse positions, he relies on active defense and calculated tactical counter-strikes to neutralize his opponent's initiative. This tactical alertness is coupled with high technical accuracy in endgames. He is particularly strong in complex rook-and-pawn endings, opposite-colored bishop structures, and knight-versus-bishop conversion scenarios, showing the patience and technical precision required to convert small advantages at the grandmaster level.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Chopra heavily relies on 1.e4, steering his games toward open and semi-open classical main lines.
-
Sicilian Defense (B90): Against the Najdorf, Chopra frequently uses the English Attack or transposes to positional lines designed to clamp down on Black's counterplay:
-
French Defense (Steinitz Variation, C11): Chopra consistently meets the French Defense with the main-line Steinitz, seeking to secure a space advantage and kingside pressure:
-
Italian Game (Giuoco Piano, C54): In double king-pawn openings, Chopra uses the Italian to construct slowly developing positional play:
2. As Black
As Black, Chopra employs a robust mix of solid defenses and counterattacking systems designed to generate complex strategic battles.
-
Sicilian Defense (Najdorf, B90): Chopra’s primary weapon against 1.e4 is the Sicilian Najdorf, allowing him to fight for the initiative and asymmetry from the opening moves:
-
King's Indian Defense (Fianchetto Variation, E62): Against 1.d4, Chopra regularly employs the King's Indian, opting for the Fianchetto variation to build active counterplay on both flanks:
-
Ruy Lopez (Closed Defense, C78): Chopra also maintains a solid classical defense against the Spanish Game to transition into rich strategic middlegames:
