Gawain Christopher Bernard Maroroa Jones (born 11 December 1987) is an English chess grandmaster and three-time British Chess Championship winner. Currently representing the English Chess Federation (ENG), he possesses a FIDE ID of 409561, a classical rating of 2639, a rapid rating of 2604, and a blitz rating of 2642. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2709 in June 2019, ranking 32nd globally. Recognized primarily as a highly active open tournament professional, a veteran Olympiad representative for England, and an influential author of opening treatises, he is highly regarded for his double-edged and dynamic approach with both colors.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, England, Maroroa Jones learned to play chess at age four. At nine years old in early 1997, he set a temporary record by becoming the youngest player in history to defeat an International Master (IM) in an official tournament game, earning a front-page feature in The Guardian. He subsequently won the British U14 and U16 championships and represented England in several World Youth and World Junior Championships.

Maroroa Jones completed his Grandmaster (GM) title requirements in 2007. He secured his norms at the 2nd EU Individual Open Championship in Liverpool (2006), the European Club Cup in Fügen (2006), and across the 2006/2007 Four Nations Chess League (4NCL) season. Shortly after earning the title, he achieved clear first-place victories at Porto San Giorgio (2007) and La Laguna (2007).

From 2008 to 2010, his successes spanned multiple continents. He shared first at the Sydney International (2008), took second place at both the Doeberl Cup (2008) and the Queenstown Classic (2009), and shared first at the London Chess Classic FIDE Open (2010). In 2011, he won the Bunratty Masters (defeating Nigel Short in their individual encounter) and captured the Commonwealth Chess Championship in Ekurhuleni. He won the Hastings International Chess Congress in the 2012/13 edition and triumphed back-to-back at the Dubai Open in 2016 and 2017—becoming the first player to achieve consecutive titles in that event.

Maroroa Jones is a three-time British Chess Champion. He won his first national title in 2012 (North Shields) by scoring 9/11 and defeating Stephen Gordon in a rapid playoff. He claimed his second title in 2017 (Llandudno) following a playoff victory over Craig Hanley and Luke McShane. In 2024 (Hull), he claimed his third British Championship after scoring 7/9 and defeating David Howell in a rapid and blitz playoff. Following the tragic death of his wife, New Zealand Women’s International Master Sue Maroroa, in 2023, he officially adopted the combined surname Maroroa Jones for competitive play starting in 2025.
