Overview

Jerguš Pecháč is a Slovak chess Grandmaster born on October 31, 2001, who represents the Slovak Chess Federation. FIDE awarded him the Candidate Master title in 2012, the FIDE Master title in 2015, the International Master title in 2017, and the Grandmaster title in 2019, making him the youngest Grandmaster in Slovakia's history at the time of his title award. He achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2637 in January 2023. Pecháč began learning chess on the internet at the age of five and joined a chess beginner group in Žilina shortly thereafter. He quickly demonstrated advanced tactical prowess, placing third in the Under-12 European Youth Chess Championship in Prague in 2012. He progressed rapidly through the national junior ranks, earning the FIDE Master title in 2015. Over the course of the 2014/15 season playing for TJ Slávia CAISSA Čadca, he famously gained over 420 Elo rating points in a single year. FIDE awarded him the International Master title in 2017. He achieved his three Grandmaster norms to officially claim the title in June 2019 at the age of 17, breaking the record to become the youngest Grandmaster in Slovak history.

In May 2021, during the online European Hybrid Qualification Tournament for the FIDE World Cup, Pecháč gained international renown in his second-round match against GM Boris Gelfand. In a critical blitz tiebreaker, Gelfand suffered a mouse slip that left his queen completely en prise. Instead of capturing the queen to secure a win and advance, Pecháč offered Gelfand a draw. Though the draw forced him into a high-stakes Armageddon game, Pecháč won the sudden-death tiebreaker to qualify for the 2021 FIDE World Cup in Sochi. In recognition of this extraordinary act of sportsmanship, FIDE awarded Pecháč the 2021 Svetozar Gligoric Trophy.

In early January 2022, Pecháč surpassed the 2600 Elo mark in live ratings while competing in a closed GM tournament in Budapest, Hungary. In 2022, he participated in the Prague Chess Festival Challengers section, finishing with a strong performance, including a final-round draw against GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Following a period of continuous rating gains, Pecháč climbed to a career-high rating of 2637 in January 2023, which earned him an invitation to the prestigious Tata Steel Challengers 2023 in Wijk aan Zee.

Pecháč has also achieved major success in domestic and open formats. He won the Chess Slovak Open (Skalicky Chess Festival) in 2021 and 2023, and captured the Slovak Blitz Championship in 2025 with an outstanding score of 9.5/11. In April 2026, Pecháč led CAISSA Čadca to the Slovak Extraliga team championship, remaining undefeated with a score of 7.5 points out of 11.
