Overview

Johan-Sebastian Christiansen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster born on June 10, 1998. Representing the Norwegian Chess Federation (NOR), Christiansen progressed through the youth ranks to earn the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2014, the International Master (IM) title in 2015, and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2018. He reached his peak classical FIDE rating of 2664 in January 2025. Primarily established as an active tournament competitor and national team representative, Christiansen is also known as a deep opening theoretician and second, having provided critical preparation to other elite grandmasters.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Christiansen began his chess development in the Sandefjord-based club Caissa, later representing Vålerenga and Offerspill. He achieved significant junior success in 2016, winning the Nordic Youth Championship (Group B, Under-18) with a perfect 6/6 score, and claiming the Norwegian Blitz Championship with 6.5/7.

He earned his first Grandmaster norm at the 2017 European Team Chess Championship in Hersonissos, Greece. He secured his second GM norm at the Pardubice Open (Czech Republic) in July 2018 and his third norm in Gothenburg (Sweden) in August 2018. FIDE officially conferred the GM title during the 89th FIDE Congress in Batumi in late 2018.

At the FIDE World Cup 2019 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Christiansen recorded a major upset in the first round by defeating the 22nd seed, Radosław Wojtaszek (then rated 2739), with a 2-0 match score. He was later eliminated in the second round by Kirill Alekseenko.

In 2020, Christiansen had a string of strong open tournament performances, sharing first place at the Prague Chess Festival (Open section) and sharing second place at both the Summer Prague Open and the 13th Paleochora Open. In 2022, he won the 1st Colonia de Sant Jordi Chess Festival on tie-breaks with a score of 7.5/9. In March 2024, Christiansen won the 53rd Abierto Internacional de Mar del Plata in Argentina as the top seed, finishing undefeated as the sole winner with 8/9 and a 2667 performance rating.
