Jorden van Foreest (born April 30, 1999) is an elite Dutch chess grandmaster. Representing the Netherlands (NED), he was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE in 2016 at the age of 16, making him the youngest grandmaster in Dutch history at the time. He achieved a peak FIDE classical rating of 2736 in April 2026, alongside a peak world ranking of No. 14. Under the ChessHere database registration, his classical rating is recorded at 2735, with a rapid rating of 2595 and a blitz rating of 2690. A two-time Dutch Chess Champion (2016 and 2025) and winner of the prestigious 83rd Tata Steel Masters in 2021, van Foreest is a premier classical tournament competitor, key representative for the Dutch national team, and a highly regarded opening theoretician.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, into a distinguished chess family, van Foreest represents a multigenerational chess legacy. His great-great-grandfather Arnold van Foreest and great-great-granduncle Dirk van Foreest were both three-time Dutch Chess Champions. His younger brother Lucas is a Grandmaster and the 2019 Dutch Champion, while his younger sister Machteld is a Woman Grandmaster who won the Dutch Women's Championship in 2022 and 2025.
Van Foreest began playing chess at the age of six, pursuing the game with competitive regularity from age nine. He rose quickly through the youth ranks, winning the European Under-14 Chess Championship in 2013 with an undefeated score of 7.5/9. He attained his International Master (IM) title in 2014 at age 15, and secured all of his Grandmaster norms over the course of 2015. He won the Groningen Chess Festival in December 2015 with 7.5/9 and officially received his GM title in early 2016.
In August 2016, at the age of 17, van Foreest secured his first Dutch Chess Championship, scoring 5.5/7 for a tournament performance rating of 2819. After completing his secondary education in 2018, he fully transitioned to professional chess.
His breakthrough at the absolute world-class level occurred in January 2021 at the 83rd Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee. Entering as one of the lower-seeded participants, van Foreest finished undefeated in joint-first place with Anish Giri on a score of 8.5/13. He went on to defeat Giri in a dramatic Armageddon playoff to win the title, becoming the first Dutch player to win the tournament since Jan Timman in 1985. This triumph earned him over 30 rating points and broke the 2700 Elo barrier for the first time. His deep theoretical expertise led to his selection as part of Magnus Carlsen's team of seconds for the 2021 World Chess Championship match against Ian Nepomniachtchi.
In December 2024, van Foreest won the European Blitz Championship in Skopje. In July 2025, he secured his second national title at the Dutch Chess Championship, defeating veteran GM Loek van Wely in the final match by a score of 1.5–0.5.
His strong run of form continued into early 2026. He finished tied for third place at the Tata Steel Masters and secured a second-place finish at the Prague Masters, registering key victories over high-level grandmasters. He also defeated Turkish GM Ediz Gurel 4.5–1.5 in a classical match. In May 2026, during the TePe Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament, van Foreest defeated World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in an 88-move classical game, propelling his live rating to its career peak of 2736.
Elite Team & Event Performance
- 45th Chess Olympiad (2024): Represented the Netherlands in Budapest, playing on Board 2. He scored key results for the team, including a draw against GM Anton Demchenko and GM Alexey Sarana.
- European Team Chess Championship (2025): Represented the Netherlands in Batumi. Playing on Board 2, he earned the individual silver medal on his board with a highly precise performance.
- European Club Cup (2025): Competed on the top boards for his club team, notably drawing a highly theoretical encounter against top Chinese GM Wei Yi.
- German Bundesliga (2025/26 Season): Represented his club on top boards, securing crucial individual wins, including a key victory against German No. 1 GM Vincent Keymer.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Van Foreest is classified as a dynamic, uncompromising, and highly analytical modern professional. Relying heavily on engine-assisted deep preparation, he approaches the game with an enterprising attitude, looking to unbalance positions early and seize space. He shows no hesitation in entering sharp, double-edged middlegames where king safety is compromised on both sides.
His material tendencies are heavily tied to structural dynamism. In Queen's Pawn and Tarrasch-type structures, he is exceptionally comfortable handling isolated queen pawns (IQP) or hanging pawns, using the open lines to generate piece activity. He has a notable fondness for positional or dynamic exchange sacrifices to disrupt an opponent's coordination or gain long-term control of critical color complexes.
In the endgame, van Foreest has evolved from a primarily tactical calculator into a highly sophisticated technical player. His defensive resilience in slightly worse endings is notable for its activity rather than passive resistance. His conversion of micro-advantages is elite, as evidenced by his grinding 88-move victory over Magnus Carlsen in 2026, wherein he gradually converted a microscopic endgame edge into a full point, as well as his endgame dismantling of Anish Giri's Najdorf setups at the 2026 Tata Steel Masters.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Van Foreest primarily utilizes 1.e4 as his main opening weapon, though he frequently transposes or shifts to 1.d4 and 1.Nf3 to target specific opponent weaknesses.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he consistently plays the Open Sicilian, favoring aggressive setups such as the English Attack against the Najdorf:
Against the classical lines of the French Defense, he regularly adopts classical systems:
When playing the Ruy Lopez, he utilizes mainline systems, including the Morphy Defense:
With 1.d4, he has developed a sophisticated sub-repertoire. At the 2026 Prague Masters, he defeated Hans Niemann in a highly theoretical endgame line of the Semi-Tarrasch:
2. As Black
As Black, van Foreest plays with high asymmetry, choosing systems that allow active counterplay.
Against 1.d4, he is one of the world's leading theoretical exponents of the Tarrasch Defense, on which he has published extensive analytical work:
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Najdorf, aiming for sharp, deeply analyzed lines:
Against the Ruy Lopez, when seeking more solid setups, he employs the Berlin Defense:
