Overview

Thai Dai Van Nguyen (born December 12, 2001) is a Czech chess grandmaster (GM) representing the Czech Republic. He earned his FIDE Master (FM) title in 2015, followed by the International Master (IM) title in 2016, and was officially awarded the Grandmaster title in 2018. Nguyen reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2677 in March 2025, peaking at World No. 46. He is primarily known as an elite classical tournament competitor, a dominant force on the Czech national team, and an individual gold medalist at the Chess Olympiad.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Nguyen grew up in Prague in a family of Vietnamese descent. He established himself early in the domestic youth circuit, winning the Czech Youth Chess Championship in the Under-10 category in 2011, followed by consecutive national Under-12 championships in 2012 and 2013.

Following his IM title in 2016, Nguyen earned his GM norms in three tournaments held across the Czech Republic and Hungary. This included notable performances in Budapest at the First Saturday tournaments in 2017, where he won two separate events. In 2018, FIDE officially ratified his Grandmaster title; at age 16 years, 9 months, and 16 days, he became the youngest chess grandmaster in the history of the Czech Republic.

In 2019, Nguyen achieved gold at the European Youth Chess Championship in Bratislava, winning the Under-18 open section with a score of 7.5/9. He qualified for the 2021 FIDE World Cup, where he advanced to the second round by defeating Ádám Kozák before being eliminated by Andrey Esipenko.

In 2024, Nguyen scored a second-place finish in the Masters section of the Prague International Chess Festival. Despite holding the lowest starting rating in the field, he bounced back from two early losses to secure victories against Mateusz Bartel, Parham Maghsoodloo, and Richárd Rapport.

His major individual tournament breakthrough came in early 2025 at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. Competing in the Challengers section, Nguyen scored 9.5/13 to tie for first place with Aydin Suleymanli. He won the rapid tiebreaks to secure the tournament victory, earning a promotion to the elite Masters section for the 2026 edition.
