Holt achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2592 in July 2018. Primarily active as a tournament competitor, he achieved national prominence by winning the U.S. Open Championship in 2014 and representing the University of Texas at Dallas chess team in premier collegiate championships.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Conrad Holt's competitive chess development began in Kansas, where he crossed the United States Chess Federation (USCF) expert rating threshold of 2000 in October 2007. He achieved his National Master title nine months later in July 2008 at the World Open in Philadelphia. Later in 2008, Holt won the U.S. Cadet Championship—an elite round-robin event for the top American players under the age of 16—securing his first International Master (IM) norm. In July 2009, he achieved his FIDE Master (FM) title, crossing the 2300 FIDE rating mark.
Holt secured his second IM norm at the 2010 World Open. He achieved his third and final Grandmaster norm at the Dallas GM Invitational in 2012, drawing GM Alexander Lenderman to reach the required performance threshold and cross the 2500 classical FIDE rating mark. The title was officially approved by the 83rd FIDE Congress in September 2012.
While pursuing a physics degree at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas), Holt was a prominent member of the university's chess team. He graduated magna cum laude in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. During his collegiate years, Holt tied for first place in the open section of the World Open in both 2013 and 2014.
His most notable individual victory occurred in August 2014 at the 115th U.S. Open Championship in Orlando, Florida. Holt finished in a six-way tie for first place with 7.5/9 points, alongside grandmasters Illia Nyzhnyk, Alexander Shabalov, Fidel Corrales Jimenez, Giorgi Margvelashvili, and IM Michael Mulyar. Holt then defeated Mulyar in an Armageddon blitz playoff game to claim the U.S. Open title.
In his debut appearance at the 2013 United States Chess Championship, Holt finished in fifth place, which qualified him for the 2013 FIDE World Cup in Tromsø, Norway, where he was eliminated in the first round by Nikita Vitiugov. He also competed in the 2015 U.S. Chess Championship, scoring a notable victory over Wesley So. After graduating from college, Holt transitioned to a career as a software engineer, though he remains active in elite competitions, including representing the USA at the 2023 FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships in Samarkand.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Conrad Holt is a dynamic, concrete calculator who excels in tactically complex middlegames. Rather than pursuing dry positional maneuvering, he favors active piece play and often steers games toward concrete tactical struggles where dynamic calculation dictates the assessment.
His treatment of king safety is active and occasionally provocative; he has shown a willingness to accept compromised or exposed pawn structures around his own king in exchange for rapid piece mobilization and counterattacking chances. In the transition from opening to middlegame, Holt prioritizes active files and diagonals, utilizing well-timed pawn breaks to create direct threats.
His material tendencies reflect his preference for concrete, dynamic calculations. His tactical alertness and calculation skills are highly evident in fast time controls, such as blitz and rapid, where he consistently defends difficult positions by identifying tactical resources.
