Pengxiang Zhang

Overview

Pengxiang Zhang (often written Zhang Pengxiang) was born on June 29, 1980, in Tianjin, China. Representing China (CHN), he was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2001, making him the 12th Grandmaster in Chinese chess history. Zhang reached his career-high FIDE classical rating of 2657 in April 2007, when he was ranked 47th in the world. Primarily known as a highly competitive tournament player, national champion, and elite team representative, his major career achievements include winning the Chinese Chess Championship in 2002 and the Asian Chess Championship in 2007.

Zhang began playing chess at the age of five and won the Chinese national youth championships in 1992 and 1993. He attained the FIDE Master (FM) title in 1996 and the International Master (IM) title in 1998, the same year he finished as the runner-up in the Chinese National Men's Chess Championship. In 1999, he won the Chinese national junior championship.

His Grandmaster title was finalized in August 2001 after he completed his final GM norm at the Asian Continental Chess Championship in Kolkata, where he finished fourth with a score of 7.5/11. Earlier that month, he claimed victory at the Zhong Hong Real Estate Cup in Beijing, scoring 8/11.

In November 2001, Zhang earned international recognition at the FIDE World Chess Championship in Moscow by eliminating former World Champion Anatoly Karpov in the first round. He held Karpov to consecutive draws in classical play and subsequently won the rapid tiebreak phase 2–0.

In 2007, Zhang won the Asian Chess Championship in Manila on tiebreaks over compatriot Wang Hao, with both scoring 8/10. His peak rating of 2657 in April 2007 solidified his position among the world's top 50 active players. He remains an active competitor in major events such as the China Chess League and various open tournaments.
