Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Russia, Semyon Lomasov began playing chess at the age of four, introduced to the game by his father. At age six, he entered the Tigran Petrosian Chess School in Moscow, training under a structured curriculum. His early talent manifested in several high-profile youth tournaments. In 2012, Lomasov won the European Rapid Youth Championship in the Under-10 division. He followed this in 2014 with a silver medal at the European Youth Championship Under-12.
His breakout year on the international youth circuit occurred in 2016. He won the Russian Youth Championship in the Under-14 category, and later in the year, secured the title of World Under-14 Champion at the World Youth Championship in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Based on these junior results, he progressed rapidly through the FIDE titles, earning his FIDE Master title in 2014 and his International Master title in 2016.
Lomasov's quest for the Grandmaster title included scoring a GM norm at the 2017 Moscow Open with a performance rating of 2623. Later in 2017, he achieved his second GM norm at the World Junior Championship in Tarvisio, Italy, with a performance rating of 2630. In February 2018, Lomasov won the Moscow Open (Category A) outright as the 12th seed, finishing with an undefeated score of 8/9. That same year, he won the Russian Junior (Under-21) Championship.
Following a relocation to Israel, Lomasov officially transferred federations from Russia (RUS) to Israel (ISR) on June 16, 2022. He continued his competitive career primarily in Europe and North America while pursuing his academics, graduating with a mathematics degree from Yeshiva University in 2024 and subsequently enrolling in a master's program in computational and mathematical engineering at Stanford University. During his collegiate years, Lomasov won the B section of the 2023 Summer Chess Classic in Saint Louis with an undefeated 6.5/9 score. Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Lomasov exhibits a universal, deeply calculated playing style characteristic of modern computer-era grandmasters. His approach is structurally disciplined, prioritizing clean development and positional soundness before initiating concrete tactical operations. He demonstrates precise calculation in complex middlegame positions and is highly capable of navigating double-edged positions while maintaining tight control over his own king safety.
His middlegame planning is heavily linked to pawn structures, frequently playing with small structural advantages or creating targets through minority attacks and central pawn breaks. Rather than relying on speculative attacks, Lomasov prefers technical exploitation. He displays notable strength in the transition from the opening to the middlegame, particularly in closed and semi-open structures.
In the endgame, Lomasov's technical conversion is highly refined. He is proficient in exploiting minor-piece imbalances, especially knight-versus-bishop scenarios where he utilizes superior king activity and pawn-chain targets. His rook-and-pawn endgame play is characterized by a high defensive threshold in passive positions and precise calculation when converting small extra-pawn advantages in active rook endings.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Lomasov's opening choices are theoretically dense, utilizing main lines designed to test opponents' preparation. He primarily relies on classical structures that offer long-term positional stability.
1. As White
Lomasov is predominantly a 1.e4 player, aiming for open positions where sharp tactical awareness and deep engine preparation can be leveraged.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he frequently employs the Rossolimo Attack to avoid heavy theoretical main lines while striving for structural control:
Against open Sicilian systems, particularly the Najdorf, he adopts standard mainlines, prioritizing rapid development and kingside expansion:
When facing the French Defense, Lomasov utilizes the Classical Steinitz variation, accepting complex, closed pawn chains:
2. As Black
As Black, Lomasov aims for solid, counter-attacking setups, prioritizing reliable structures with clear avenues for piece activity.
Against 1.e4, his primary defensive weapon is the French Defense, often steering the game toward closed, strategically complex middlegames:
Against the Tarrasch Variation of the French, he opts for active piece play in open central lines:
Against 1.d4, Lomasov relies on the Bogo-Indian Defense, seeking rapid queenside piece activation and structural elasticity:
Against the English Opening (1.c4), he generally plays the Symmetrical Variation, maintaining a solid central presence:
