Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Suleymanli possesses a universal, highly calculation-based style characteristic of the modern computer-analytical era. He shows a deep comfort in sharp, non-standard middlegames with dynamic material imbalances. His tactical vision allows him to evaluate speculative sacrifices accurately, as demonstrated by his decisive queen sacrifice against Mahammad Muradli in the 2024 Azerbaijani Championship.
In terms of king safety, Suleymanli is highly resourceful when defending structurally compromised or space-deficient positions, often relying on precise tactical counter-punches rather than purely passive defensive maneuvers. He possesses notable transition skills from theoretical openings into complex, double-edged middlegames.
His technical endgame capability is solid, showing high precision in maintaining defensive fortresses and converting minor material or positional advantages. This technical resilience was highlighted in his crucial final-round draw against Rauf Mamedov in an Exchange Caro-Kann to win the 2020 Aeroflot Open.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Suleymanli's repertoire reflects elite, engine-tested preparation. He is highly transpositional and analytical, having authored theoretical opening courses on various setups.
1. As White
When opening with 1.e4, Suleymanli frequently transitions into sharp Open Sicilians or positional sidelines. Against the Sicilian Najdorf, he has utilized the 6.f4 variation:
Against the French Defense, Suleymanli has extensively analyzed and played the Tarrasch Variation:
When playing closed systems, Suleymanli frequently employs the English Opening or Queen's Gambit structures. In the English Opening, he favors lines with a kingside fianchetto:
2. As Black
Suleymanli is a leading theorist on the Sicilian Defense, particularly the Taimanov (Paulsen) and Classical variations, on which he has published comprehensive theoretical repertoires.
In the Taimanov Sicilian, he favors flexible, rapid-development lines:
In the Classical Sicilian, he advocates for concrete, counter-attacking setups, especially preparing deep lines to combat the Richter-Rauzer (6.Bg5) attack:
Against 1.d4, Suleymanli heavily relies on the Nimzo-Indian Defense, aiming for active piece play and structural imbalances:
He also utilizes the solid Exchange Variation of the Caro-Kann Defense as a reliable secondary weapon to secure positional equality:
