Francesco Sonis (born April 29, 2002) is an Italian Grandmaster representing the Italian Chess Federation (ITA) with a FIDE ID of 895733. He holds a classical FIDE rating of 2556, a rapid rating of 2571, and a blitz rating of 2463, with a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2580 achieved in May 2024. Sonis was awarded the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2015, the International Master (IM) title in 2017, and achieved the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2021. Born in Oristano, Sardinia, Francesco Sonis emerged as a prominent junior talent in Italian chess. In 2013, he achieved early domestic success by winning the Italian Youth Chess Championship in the Under-12 (U12) division. He quickly progressed through the FIDE title ranks, earning the FIDE Master title in 2015 and the International Master title in 2017. He trained for a period during his youth with Macedonian Grandmaster Alex Colovic, under whose guidance he won the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-16 (U16) category in Riga, Latvia, in 2018.

In December 2020, Sonis won the bronze medal in the Under-18 Open category at the FIDE Online World Cadets & Youth Rapid Chess Championship. After a semifinal loss to Nihal Sarin, he secured third place by defeating Mahdi Gholami Orimi in an armageddon tiebreak.

In May 2021, Sonis contributed to the Italian national team’s gold-medal victory at the Mitropa Cup. Later that year, in August 2021, he achieved his third and final Grandmaster norm at the Spilimbergo Open, leading to the official ratification of his GM title.

In December 2024, Sonis claimed his maiden national title, winning the Absolute Italian Chess Championship in Turin with an undefeated score of 7.5/11.

In early 2026, Sonis won clear first place at the Central Florida Chess Club (CFCC) Winter Open in Orlando, Florida, with a perfect 5/5 score. In February 2026, he participated in the Connecticut Classical, where he defeated Chinese-born American Grandmaster Zhou Jianchao in the fourth round, ending Zhou's historic 158-game unbeaten classical streak, and ultimately won the tournament. Sonis currently studies cybersecurity operations at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he is a key member of the university's highly competitive collegiate chess program.
