Biography & Major Career Milestones
Gažík developed rapidly through the youth ranks in Slovakia, establishing himself early on the continental stage. In 2010, he won the European Youth Chess Championship in the Under-10 category in Batumi, Georgia. He earned the FIDE International Master (IM) title in 2016 following steady international progress.
His breakthrough junior achievement occurred in October 2018 in Porto Carras, Greece, where he won the World Youth Chess Championship in the Under-18 Open division. Scoring 8.5/11, he secured the gold medal ahead of a competitive field, including future Grandmasters Igor Janik and Szymon Gumularz.
Gažík's individual tournament victories include the Slovakia International Chess Tournament in Prievidza (2015), the Chess Masters Pieniny (2017), and the Graz Open (2019), where he took clear first with a score of 8/9. In 2022, after fulfilling his final title requirements, FIDE officially awarded him the Grandmaster (GM) title.
In July 2025, Gažík won the Slovak Chess Championship in Piešťany. Competing in a nine-round closed national championship, he scored an undefeated 7/9 to claim the title, finishing half a point ahead of Juraj Druska and Jerguš Pecháč. Concurrently, Gažík maintains an active role in collegiate chess in the United States, representing Saint Louis University (SLU) while completing his MBA.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Gažík is a dynamic, universal player characterized by precise calculation and tactical alertness. He demonstrates high comfort in sharp, asymmetrical positions, particularly in complex open games and Sicilian lines where precise king safety and space management are paramount.
He possesses a highly active approach to material, showing a willingness to initiate exchange sacrifices or pawn deficits to secure piece activity and disrupt his opponent’s coordination. His defensive resilience is backed by concrete, computer-era calculation, allowing him to navigate and simplify inferior or double-edged positions.
In the endgame, Gažík exhibits sophisticated technical skill. He is capable of converting minor positional advantages into wins through methodical rook and minor-piece maneuvering. This positional endgame control was demonstrated at the 2024 Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Championship, where he converted a complex, balanced endgame into a victory against GM Koustav Chatterjee by accurately shepherding a passed pawn under a sequence of checks.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Gažík is primarily a 1.e4 player, utilizing sharp mainlines and strategically robust anti-systems to pressure opponents in open structures.
Against the Sicilian Defense, he employs the Closed Sicilian to restrict Black’s central counterplay, often choosing a quick kingside bishop development:
Alternatively, against 2...d6, he plays the Adams Attack or open mainlines to steer into complex middlegames:
Against 1...e5, he bypasses extensive Ruy Lopez theory in favor of the Scotch Game, aiming for the active central clashes of the Mieses variation:
Against the Caro-Kann Defense, he utilizes the flexible Two Knights Attack to create early positional imbalances:
2. As Black
As Black, Gažík balances solid, structural mainlines with highly active defenses that offer counterplay.
Against 1.d4, his main defensive weapon is the Bogo-Indian Defense, where he establishes a solid pawn structure and trades the dark-squared bishop for a knight to structure his play on light squares:
Against 1.e4, he regularly plays the Sicilian Defense, opting for the sharp, theoretical battlefield of the Najdorf Variation to maximize counter-attacking chances:
He also employs Alekhine's Defense as a dynamic hypermodern sideline to provoke White into overextending the central pawns:
