Overview

Leon Livaić (born October 16, 2000) is a Croatian chess Grandmaster representing the Croatian federation (CRO). Awarded the Grandmaster title in 2022, Livaić is a prominent figure in Croatian chess, having previously achieved the FIDE Master title in 2015 and the International Master title in 2017. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2591 in April 2023. Primarily known as a highly competitive tournament player, national champion, and league team competitor, Livaić has established a strong reputation as both an individual contender and a primary board player in several European team leagues.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Zagreb, Livaić was introduced to chess at the age of three by his father and played his first rated tournament at age six. He progressed rapidly through the national youth ranks, dominating multiple national youth championships and earning his FIDE Master title in 2015 at age 15.

In 2017, Livaić enjoyed a breakthrough year in junior and rapid chess. He finished fourth in the European Youth Chess Championship, became the European Rapid Youth Champion, won the bronze medal in the European Youth Blitz Championship, and capped off the year by winning the World Rapid Youth Championship in December. During this period, he also secured the youngest International Master title in the history of Croatian chess.

In 2019, Livaić briefly reduced his over-the-board activity to study Chemistry at the University of Zagreb, but returned to consistent competition shortly after. He finished third in the 2021 Croatian Chess Championship, finishing behind Grandmasters Zdenko Kožul and Ivan Šarić.

Livaić fulfilled his remaining Grandmaster title requirements in 2022, scoring his final grandmaster norm in the Austrian Bundesliga to officially receive the GM title. In April 2023, he tied for second place in the Reykjavik Open with a score of 7/9, finishing alongside GMs Mustafa Yılmaz, Abhijeet Gupta, Maxime Lagarde, Gabor Papp, Matthieu Cornette, and Tamás Bánusz, which propelled his rating to a career-peak of 2591. In December 2023, Livaić won the Croatian Chess Championship in Zagreb, finishing undefeated with 8.5/11 to claim the national title half a point ahead of Marin Bosiočić. In November 2025, he finished in clear second place with a score of 6/9 at the Category XI Tournament of Peace in Zagreb.
