Sergey Drygalov

Overview

Sergey Maksimovich Drygalov (born May 19, 1999) is a Russian chess Grandmaster (GM). FIDE officially awarded him the International Master (IM) title in 2018 and the Grandmaster title in 2022. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2571 in December 2025. Drygalov is a professional tournament player, trainer, and accomplished online competitor. He is also recognized alongside his twin brother, Andrey Drygalov, as part of a rare grandmaster sibling pair.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Drygalov was born in Kurgan, Russia, and developed his chess career alongside his twin brother. In 2012, he achieved significant early success by securing the silver medal in the Under-14 category at the European Youth Chess Championship. During his youth development, he also won the Moscow Open in his respective age categories in both 2010 and 2012.

He earned his third and final norm for the International Master title at the Alexander Panchenko Memorial in Chelyabinsk in late 2017, and FIDE officially ratified the title in early 2018. Drygalov's career gained further momentum in April 2019 when he won the Russian Junior Under-21 Championship in Sochi, finishing ahead of Semen Khanin and his brother Andrey. Later that year, he won the Ural Federal District Men's Championship.

In September 2020, Drygalov won the open individual section of the All-Russian Student Competition. Following consistent performances on the national and international open circuits, he fulfilled his final grandmaster requirements and was awarded the Grandmaster title in 2022.

His notable open tournament performances include winning the St. Petersburg Summer (Петербуржское лето) tournament in August 2023. On September 26, 2023, he won a Chess.com Titled Tuesday tournament, finishing undefeated in a field that featured elite international competition.

In early 2024, Drygalov placed 6th out of 142 players at the highly competitive Aeroflot Open A in Moscow, scoring 6.0/9. Later that year, he won the Shcherbin Memorial. In January 2025, Drygalov dominated the Cape Town Masters Challenge, finishing with a perfect score of 9/9, two full points ahead of his nearest competitor. In November 2025, he tied for second place at the President's Cup of Tajikistan in Dushanbe, scoring 6:5/9 and claiming the silver medal on tiebreak. This string of performances propelled him to his peak FIDE rating of 2571.
