Overview

Sipke Ernst is a Dutch chess Grandmaster and FIDE Trainer born on January 8, 1979, in Dokkum, Netherlands. He represents the Netherlands (NED) in international competition. Awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1999 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2007, he achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2606 in January 2012. Ernst is a prominent tournament competitor, team league player, and professional coach who has secured multiple medals at the Dutch Chess Championship and represented his national federation at both the Chess Olympiad and the European Team Chess Championship.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Ernst learned to play chess at the age of nine in his home country. He achieved early national success in junior categories, becoming the Dutch Under-14 Youth Champion in 1993. His major breakthrough in adult competition occurred in 1998 when, rated approximately 2300, he qualified for the Dutch Chess Championship. Facing a field of elite grandmasters, Ernst finished 9th out of 12 players and secured his first International Master norm, which paved the way to receiving the IM title in 1999.

His open tournament career saw steady progression. In 2000, he won the international open in Lichfield and finished tied for third in Hoogeveen. In 2001, he secured his first victory at the Groningen Chess Festival—a tournament he would win again in 2005 and 2006. In 2004, Ernst delivered a standout performance in Group C of the Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He finished in clear second place with 10/13, trailing only the future World Champion Magnus Carlsen.

Ernst secured his final Grandmaster norm at the 2006 European Club Cup in Fügen, Austria. Representing the German club Schachgesellschaft 1868-Aljechin Solingen, he scored 5.5/7 with a 2725 performance rating. FIDE officially awarded him the Grandmaster title in 2007.

In national championships, Ernst has been a consistent podium finisher. He won three bronze medals at the Dutch Chess Championship in 2010, 2011, and 2014, followed by a silver medal in 2017. Internationally, he claimed both the Belgrade Summer Open and the Belgrade Trophy in 2011. Along with his active playing career, Ernst completed a Master’s degree in Dutch Language and Culture at the University of Groningen. In 2018, he was awarded the FIDE Trainer title and is a regular author of strategic and opening instructional content.
