Alojzije Jankovic

Overview

Alojzije Janković (born April 2, 1983) is a Croatian chess Grandmaster (awarded the GM title in 2006) representing the Croatian Chess Federation (CRO). He reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2593 in January 2017. Beyond his competitive playing career as a Grandmaster, Janković is a prominent theoretician, certified FIDE Trainer, and FIDE Organizer. He serves as the FIDE Zone 1.2 President and as a Vice President of the European Chess Union (ECU). He is widely regarded as a leading analytical authority on the Sicilian Defense, particularly the Richter-Rauzer Variation, about which he has co-authored definitive reference books.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Born in Vinkovci, Croatia, Janković developed rapidly as a junior player, capturing multiple cadet and national junior Croatian championships, including the Croatian U17 championship in 1998.

Janković earned his FIDE Grandmaster title in 2006. This milestone was accompanied by a string of tournament victories, beginning with winning the Zagreb Open in his native city in 2006. His international tournament successes continued with clear first-place finishes at Sarajevo (Bosna B) in 2006, the Sabadell Open in 2008, and the International Styrian Open in 2014, as well as sharing first place at the Sitges Open in 2008.

In domestic individual championships, Janković consistently challenged at the top. He finished as vice-champion of Croatia in 2005 and 2010. He shared first place in the Croatian Championship in 2010 and won the title outright in January 2015, officially claiming the 2014 national champion title.

In addition to OTB play, Janković is highly active in coaching, publishing, and chess administration. From 2016 until 2025, he held the position of secretary general of the Croatian Chess Federation. He co-authored The Richter-Rauzer Reborn with Grandmaster Zdenko Kožul (Thinkers Publishing, 2014) and later released an expanded, updated edition titled The Richter-Rauzer Reborn: The Kozul Variation in 2019. In 2020, he published The Grandmaster Mindset: A First Course to Chess Improvement. He has also served as the editor-in-chief of Šahovski glasnik (Chess Journal) and hosts the weekly television program "Šahovski komentar" (Chess Commentary) on Croatian national television (HRT 3).

• Chess Olympiad (2010): Represented Croatia on Board 4 at the 39th Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

In the endgame, Janković utilizes an active defensive style, placing heavy emphasis on active rooks and centralized kings. In his monograph The Grandmaster Mindset, he outlines a methodical approach to endgames, specifically focusing on the geometrical coordination of knights, the construction of defensive fortresses, and tactical themes in rook endgames.
