Overview
Jan Małek (born 16 November 2007) is a Polish chess grandmaster representing the Polish Chess Federation (POL). He attained the International Master (IM) title in 2024 and was awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2025. Małek reached his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2560 in May 2026. Primarily an active tournament and team-league competitor, he has quickly risen through the ranks to establish himself as one of Poland's most promising young grandmasters, known for strong classical tournament results and active participation in elite European leagues.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Małek began his chess development in Gdynia, Poland, and quickly excelled in the junior ranks. He won medals at the Polish Youth Chess Championships on three occasions, securing gold in the U16 category at Sypniewo (2022), silver in the U16 category at Jastrzębia Góra (2023), and gold in the U18 category at Stare Jabłonki (2024). He also won the Polish Youth Blitz Championship in the U16 category in Rzeszów in 2022. Internationally, he represented Poland at the European Youth Chess Championships, notably finishing fifth in his age division at Mamaia in 2023.
Małek's title progression accelerated rapidly in 2024. He was awarded the International Master title and secured a Grandmaster norm during the Chess Week in Przeworsk Round Robin GM Norm Tournament, where he scored 5.5/9 to share second place. He also shared second place in the Open A section of the Ludwik Zamenhof Memorial in Białystok. FIDE officially confirmed his Grandmaster title in 2025.
Later in 2025, Małek achieved a major breakthrough at the 2nd Dole Trophy Pasino Grand Aix Masters in Aix-en-Provence, France. He tied for first place in the classical tournament with a score of 7.5/9 and a tournament performance rating of 2751, defeating the top-seeded GM Pavel Eljanov in the final round. Małek finished as the runner-up after a rapid playoff against GM Iniyan Panneerselvam. He followed this with a strong showing at the Sparkassen Chess Trophy A-Open in Dortmund, finishing in the leading group on 7/9.
In 2026, Małek competed in the European Individual Chess Championship in Katowice, Poland, finishing with 7.5/11 and taking the top prize among the local Polish participants alongside GM Szymon Gumularz and GM Jan Klimkowski.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Małek is a dynamic and concrete modern player who combines sharp, calculated tactical lines with a highly functional positional foundation. He shows no hesitation in steering games toward complex middlegames where precise calculation is rewarded. His defensive capabilities are robust, demonstrating resilience and active piece deployment even in structurally compromised or slightly passive positions.
A key highlight of Małek's style is his technical proficiency in the endgame. His conversion abilities were notably demonstrated in his crucial final-round victory over the highly experienced GM Pavel Eljanov at the 2025 Dole Trophy. In this encounter, Małek conducted a highly sophisticated endgame, activating his king to restrict the opponent’s counterplay and construct a decisive winning net. He shows strong capability in handling complex major-piece and minor-piece endings, frequently striving to translate small positional advantages into full points through patient maneuvering.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Małek possesses a versatile and theoretically sound opening repertoire, primarily relying on Queen's Pawn openings (1.d4) while also utilizing flank systems (1.Nf3 and 1.c4) and occasionally 1.e4.
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Exchange/Positional Variation): Małek regularly employs the Exchange Variation of the QGD to create long-term structural pressure.
- Trompowsky Attack: Used as an alternative weapon to sidestep standard theoretical lines and force concrete middlegame battles.
- Italian Game (Giuoco Pianissimo): In his 1.e4 games, Małek frequently steers toward the slow, maneuvering setups of the Italian Game, emphasizing pawn structure and central control.
- Sicilian Defense (Alapin Variation): Against the Sicilian, Małek often chooses the solid Alapin setup.
2. As Black
As Black, Małek aims for active counterplay and solid setups against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, relying on deep theoretical preparation to neutralize White's initiative.
- Sicilian Defense (Najdorf Variation): Małek’s primary counter-attacking weapon against 1.e4, leading to double-edged and highly tactical positions.
- French Defense: Used as a solid, strategic alternative against 1.e4.
- Queen's Gambit Declined / Catalan Setups: Against 1.d4, Małek frequently utilizes the classical Queen's Gambit Declined, transposing into solid setups or Ragozin-style active defenses, and handles the Catalan with closed defensive setups.
