Luke James McShane (born 7 January 1984) is an English chess Grandmaster (2000) and finance professional. A prominent child prodigy, McShane won the World Under-10 Championship in 1992 and subsequently became the youngest British player to achieve both the International Master (IM) title in 1997 at age 13 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2000 at age 16. Representing the English federation (ENG), McShane achieved a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2713 in July 2012, ranking as world number 29 in November 2012. Throughout his adulthood, McShane has maintained a dual career as an investment banker and trader in London's financial sector alongside elite-level competitive chess, commonly earning him the designation of the "world's strongest amateur". Born on 7 January 1984 in London, McShane's talent emerged early.
