Tamas Banusz

Overview

Tamás Bánusz is a Hungarian chess Grandmaster born on April 8, 1989. He represents the Hungarian Chess Federation (HUN) and was officially awarded the Grandmaster title in 2011, followed by the FIDE Trainer title in 2019. Bánusz achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2641 in January 2018. He is primarily known as a highly consistent tournament professional, a regular representative of the Hungarian national team in elite international team events, and a prominent opening theoretician and chess coach.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Bánusz developed through the Hungarian junior chess system, securing early national successes including the Hungarian U16 Championship in 2005 and the Hungarian U20 Championship in 2007.

His title progression began with the International Master (IM) title in 2005. He secured his Grandmaster title after fulfilling three norm requirements:

• The first norm was achieved at the XXIV Open Internacional Vila de Sitges (2008), where he scored 7/9.
• The second norm was earned at the Balaton International Chess Festival Open in Balatonlelle (2009) with 6.5/9.
• The third and final norm was completed at the Budapest First Saturday GM tournament in October 2010, scoring 7/9.

FIDE formally approved his Grandmaster title at the 1st Quarter Presidential Board Meeting in February 2011.

On the national stage, Bánusz finished as the Hungarian vice-champion in 2013. More than a decade later, at the 2025 Hungarian Chess Championship in Budapest, he secured a joint second-place finish, scoring an undefeated 6/9.
