Biography & Major Career Milestones
Early Life and National Dominance

- 2008 (Kraków)
- 2013 (Chorzów)
- 2023 (Warsaw)
In both 2008 and 2013, his wife, GM Monika Soćko, also won the Polish Women's Chess Championship, marking historic "double-gold" achievements for the couple.
In international open tournaments, Soćko won the prestigious Riga Technical University Open in 2013, scoring 7/9 to edge out Robin van Kampen on tiebreaks. He won the 105 Jahre FC St. Pauli Open in Hamburg in 2015. Over his career, his FIDE rating steadily ascended, culminating in a peak classical Elo of 2663 in February 2014. He qualified for the FIDE World Cup in 2011, where he was paired against Viktor Bologan in the first round.

- Polish Team Chess Championship: Historically one of the most successful players in the Polish League, Soćko has won 11 team gold medals, 8 individual golds, 7 team silvers, and 5 individual silvers.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Soćko's style is dynamic, balanced, and highly concrete, characteristic of the modern calculation-driven era. While capable of rigorous positional play in closed and semi-open structures, he thrives in complex middlegames arising from semi-open structures, particularly the Sicilian Defense and King's Indian systems.
King Safety and Tactical Awareness
Soćko does not shy away from sharp, double-edged double-fianchetto positions or structures where both kings are exposed. His tactical awareness is characterized by geometric piece activity and precise calculation. In rapid and blitz games, his speed of calculation allows him to navigate extreme time pressure with great resourcefulness.
Material Preferences
In transition phases, Soćko is willing to accept an isolated pawn structure (such as the Isolated Queen's Pawn or IQP) if it grants active piece play and open diagonals for his bishops. He is proficient in utilizing the bishop pair, particularly in open structures where his long-range pieces can dominate knight-centric frameworks.
Endgame Profiling
Soćko is a highly competent technical endgame player, capable of converting minute advantages. In rook endgames, he excels at formulating plans involving active king participation and maximizing rook activity over purely defensive setups. He is also experienced in defending complex minor piece endgames, demonstrating a deep understanding of standard theoretical defensive fortresses and coordination in knight-versus-bishop scenarios.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Soćko has played both 1.e4 and 1.d4 throughout his career, often adjusting his choice based on tournament strategy. In his 1.e4 games, he is highly specialized in the English Attack and related sharp lines of the Open Sicilian. Against 1.d4, he frequently opts for Catalan setups.
Open Sicilian (English Attack / Yugoslav-style Setups)
Against the Najdorf and Scheveningen variations of the Sicilian, Soćko has a deep history of playing the aggressive English Attack with f3, g4, and Be3, aiming for opposite-side castling and direct kingside pawn storms:
Catalan Opening (Fianchetto Setups)
As a 1.d4 player, Soćko frequently utilizes the Catalan Opening to generate long-term positional pressure on the queenside, utilizing the powerful g2-bishop:
2. As Black
As Black, Soćko favors dynamic and complex defenses that offer counterplay, avoiding overly passive or purely defensive structures.
French Defense (Winawer Variation)
Against 1.e4, Soćko has a long-standing commitment to the French Defense, with a particular emphasis on the sharp Winawer Variation:
King's Indian Defense
Against 1.d4, Soćko has historically employed the King's Indian Defense, looking for asymmetrical positions, direct kingside counter-attacks, and sharp tactical skirmishes:
Nimzo-Indian Defense
In addition to the King's Indian, Soćko frequently employs the Nimzo-Indian Defense when White plays 3.Nc3, striving for immediate control over the central e4-square:
