Overview
Brandon Jacobson (born November 14, 2003) is an American chess grandmaster (GM) who officially received his title in 2020 at the age of 16. Representing the United States, Jacobson achieved his peak classical FIDE rating of 2599 in November 2025. He is primarily active as a professional tournament player, open Swiss competitor, and opening theoretician, having progressed rapidly through the national scholastic ranks and junior circuits before securing prominent placements in elite open events.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, Jacobson was introduced to chess at the age of four, mentored in part by his older brother, International Master (IM) Aaron Jacobson. He grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, where he was homeschooled and was accepted to Columbia University at age 14.
Jacobson’s junior career featured strong finishes on the continental stage, starting with a gold medal at the 2014 North American Youth Under-12 Championship, which earned him the Candidate Master (CM) title. In 2016, he won the Barber National Tournament of K-8 Champions. He subsequently secured the FIDE Master (FM) title by winning the North American Youth Under-16 Championship in 2017. He earned the International Master (IM) title in 2018, crossing the 2400 FIDE rating threshold during the Philadelphia International after defeating IM Gabriel Flom.
Jacobson's progression to the Grandmaster title involved earning his three required norms in rapid succession:
- His first GM norm was achieved in early 2019 at the Marshall Chess Club FIDE GM Round Robin, where he finished in clear first place.
- He secured his second GM norm later in 2019 at the Chess Max Academy Fall Invitational, also taking first place.
- He earned his third and final GM norm in January 2020 by winning the Charlotte Open in Charlotte, North Carolina, scoring 7.0/9 and finishing half a point ahead of a field containing several grandmasters.
Following his title confirmation, Jacobson tied for fourth in the 2020 US Junior Chess Championship. Over the subsequent years, his classical performance continued to ascend. He won the 2023 Saint Louis Super Swiss and secured second place at the Chessable Sunway Sitges Chess Festival in December 2023, following a successful playoff against GM Volodar Murzin. In April 2025, he finished as the runner-up in the Grenke Chess Open (A-Open). In January 2026, Jacobson registered a dominant performance at the 9th Ciudad de Montevideo Open (Antel Cup) in Uruguay, finishing in clear first place with an undefeated 7.5/9, which included a decisive sixth-round victory over top-seeded GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen. Additionally, he won the Montevideo Blitz Open with an 8.5/9 score.
In May 2024, Jacobson gained wide online attention under the pseudonym "Viih_Sou," employing highly unorthodox double-rook pawn openings (specifically 1.a4 and 2.Ra3) in high-level blitz play. In December 2024, at the over-the-board FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in New York, Jacobson utilized 1.a4 to defeat world elite GM Hikaru Nakamura in 47 moves.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Jacobson is a concrete, computer-era calculator who combines a deep understanding of standard modern structures with highly creative tactical experimentation. He is capable of navigating complex, asymmetrical middlegames where classical positional rules are deprioritized in favor of dynamic piece activity. This is highlighted by his practical familiarity with offbeat schemes, such as early rook-pawn advances, which he utilizes to disrupt his opponents' theoretical preparation in speed chess.
His material tendencies are versatile; he is highly comfortable playing with dynamic imbalances, such as giving up structural integrity for active piece play, or managing double-isolated pawns in exchange for active diagonal control. In standard master-level play, however, he remains a precise technical player who excels at managing small space advantages and exploiting tactical errors in the late middlegame. His endgame profile exhibits strong defensive resilience in worse positions, alongside a high conversion accuracy in technical rook-and-pawn endings and minor-piece endgames.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Jacobson employs a dual repertoire of 1.e4 and 1.d4, alongside occasional English or Reti systems.
Against 1...e5, he advocates a modern approach against the Petroff Defense, using 3.d4 to generate imbalanced pawn structures:
In closed openings, Jacobson frequently transitions into Catalan structures, utilizing a kingside fianchetto to put pressure on the black queenside:
Additionally, he employs Reti systems to establish flexible central control:
In rapid and blitz contexts, he has also tested experimental flanking moves:
2. As Black
As Black, Jacobson's repertoire features highly combatative lines designed to maximize counterplay.
Against 1.e4, his primary weapon is the Sicilian Defense, specifically lines branching from 2...Nc6. He favors the Rossolimo Variation when White plays 3.Bb5:
Against the Open Sicilian, he steers into the Sveshnikov Variation, seeking dynamic counterplay at the cost of structural concessions:
He also employs the solid Caro-Kann Defense to establish solid pawn structures in the center:
Against 1.d4, Jacobson typically utilizes the King's Indian Defense or the Grunfeld Defense to maintain asymmetrical counterattacking chances:
