Yona Kosashvili

Overview

Yona Kosashvili (born July 3, 1970) is an Israeli chess Grandmaster and prominent orthopedic surgeon. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he emigrated to Israel in 1972. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 1990 and the Grandmaster (GM) title in 1994. Kosashvili reached his career-high FIDE rating of 2580 in July 1995. Throughout his chess career, he has balanced competitive play at the international level—representing Israel in team events and winning multiple international tournaments—with an active medical career, currently serving as the head of the orthopedic department at Beilinson Hospital. He is married to International Master Sofia Polgar.

Kosashvili established himself as a leading Israeli junior player in the late 1980s. He represented Israel at the European Junior Chess Championship (1989/1990) and achieved third place at the 1990 Israeli Chess Championship. Following his IM title in 1990, his competitive career progressed rapidly, culminating in the Grandmaster title in 1994.

His tournament victories include clear first-place finishes at Tel Aviv in 1992 and Rishon LeZion in 1994. In 1995, he won the Haifa (Vidra) tournament and shared first place at the Vidmar Memorial in Portoroz. In 2002, he tied for first at the Curaçao Anniversary Open. Following his peak rating in 1995, Kosashvili prioritized medical training. He graduated from Tel Aviv University's medicine program and completed orthopedic surgery fellowships at Mount Sinai Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto. He has been largely inactive in competitive chess since 2012.
