Luis Engel (born October 14, 2002) is a German chess Grandmaster (GM) representing the German (GER) federation. He was awarded the International Master (IM) title in 2018 and achieved his Grandmaster title in 2020. A prominent figure in German chess, Engel is a national champion, a regular competitor in the Chess Bundesliga, and a theoretical author. He achieved his career-high FIDE classical rating of 2594 in April 2026. As of May 2026, Engel maintains a classical FIDE rating of 2593, a rapid rating of 2452, and a blitz rating of 2455.

Luis Engel was born in Hamburg, Germany, and developed his chess skills in his youth alongside his twin brother Robert, joining the Hamburger Chess Club (Hamburger SK) in 2011. Under the guidance of renowned grandmaster and endgame theorist Karsten Müller, Engel steadily progressed through the national junior ranks.
His junior career was marked by multiple national titles. Engel won the German U12 Championship in 2014, followed by the German U14 Championship in 2016. In 2019, he represented Germany at the U18 European Team Championship, claiming first place.
Engel earned his International Master (IM) title in 2018. His trajectory toward the Grandmaster (GM) title was swift, culminating in his third and final GM norm in October 2019 at the age of 16. The FIDE Executive Board officially approved his Grandmaster title in February 2020.
At the adult national level, Engel achieved his first major milestone in 2017, finishing 10th at the 88th German Chess Championship in Apolda. In August 2020, at the age of 17, he won the German Chess Championship, becoming the youngest player in German history to win the national title. He followed this success by winning the German Masters in 2021, an elite round-robin tournament featuring Germany's top players.
Concurrently with his professional chess career, Engel pursued academic studies, reading law at the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg from September 2020 until his first state examination in 2025.
