Parham Maghsoodloo is an Iranian chess grandmaster born on August 11, 2000. Representing the Iranian chess federation (IRI), he achieved his International Master (IM) and Grandmaster (GM) titles in 2016 at the age of 16. Maghsoodloo reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2742 and a world ranking of No. 12 in December 2023. A prolific and competitive tournament player, he is a three-time Iranian national champion (2017, 2018, 2021), the 2018 World Junior Chess Champion, and a core leader of the Iranian national team on Board 1.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Maghsoodloo was born in Gonbad-e Kavus, Iran, and began playing chess at the age of nine. He quickly advanced through the national junior ranks, debuting in the Iranian Under-12 Championship in 2011. In 2012, he placed equal fifth at the World Under-12 Championship in Slovenia. By 2014, he had secured equal first place in the Mazandaran Chess Championship and won his first FIDE-rated open tournament at the Qazvin Nowruz Open.
At the age of 15, Maghsoodloo finished sixth at the 2015 Asian Continental Championship, a result that qualified him for the 2015 FIDE World Cup where he was paired against grandmaster Wesley So in the opening round. In 2016, Maghsoodloo secured the Grandmaster title by submitting four norms by September, becoming one of the youngest grandmasters in Iranian history. He claimed the Iranian Chess Championship in 2017 and defended his title in 2018. He went on to win a third national championship in 2021 with a score of 14/15.
In September 2018, Maghsoodloo won the 57th World Junior Chess Championship in Gebze, Turkey. He won the tournament with a round to spare, opening with a score of 9½/10 and finishing with 9½/11 to end a full point ahead of his closest rivals, registering a tournament performance rating of 2823. This performance propelled his live rating to 2691. The same year, he won several open tournaments, including the Sharjah Masters, the Mumbai Open, the Amol Open, the Chomein Open, and the Yerevan Open.
Following the return of over-the-board play after the pandemic, Maghsoodloo surpassed the 2700 Elo threshold. His strong form throughout 2023 culminated in a peak FIDE rating of 2742 in December. In April 2025, Maghsoodloo won the Reykjavik Open, scoring 7½/9 to finish clear first ahead of a field containing Vasyl Ivanchuk and Mahammad Muradli. Later that month, he finished as runner-up behind Magnus Carlsen at the inaugural Grenke Freestyle Chess Open, securing qualification for the Las Vegas Freestyle Chess Grand Slam.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Maghsoodloo is characterized by an aggressive, concrete, and highly tactical computer-era playing style. He is a highly active calculator who favors sharp, asymmetrical middlegames where he actively seeks winning chances and avoids passive draws. Under the training of grandmaster Ivan Sokolov, he developed a deep understanding of dynamic pawn structures and the coordination of "rolling" pawn majorities.
Maghsoodloo is comfortable castling on opposite sides to launch direct kingside attacks, and he is highly willing to accept structural defects, such as doubled pawns or an isolated queen pawn, in exchange for active files and open diagonals. He routinely employs tactical piece sacrifices to seize the initiative. Defensively, he seeks active counterplay in inferior positions rather than adopting a purely passive defense, often complicating the struggle to create practical drawing or winning chances. In the endgame, Maghsoodloo relies on active rook play and precise calculation in technical minor-piece endgames.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Maghsoodloo mainly relies on 1.d4 and 1.Nf3 systems, using flexible structures to direct the game toward complex strategic lines.
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Exchange Variation): Maghsoodloo often uses the exchange line with Nc3 and Bg5 to build queenside pressure.
- Nimzo-Indian Defense (Rubinstein/Classical Systems): He favors reliable setups involving a quick e3 and Bd3 to contest central space.
- London System / Queen's Pawn Game: He occasionally relies on flexible developments with Bf4 to bypass theoretical mainlines.
2. As Black
As Black, Maghsoodloo counters 1.e4 with sharp, combative lines and meets 1.d4 with flexible strategic setups.
- Sicilian Najdorf: His primary, highly tactical response to open 1.e4 lines.
- Caro-Kann Defense: Maghsoodloo implements the Advance Variation, employing both the classic 3...Bf5 and the modern 3...c5 line.
- Queen's Indian Setup with 3...h6: In closed openings, he has adopted the flexible 3...h6 waiting move against 1.d4.
- Queen's Gambit Declined (Ragozin/Orthodox Variations): Maghsoodloo frequently plays the Ragozin to achieve active piece play.
