Stepan Zilka

Overview

Štěpán Žilka (born 11 November 1988) is a Czech chess Grandmaster (GM) representing the Czech Republic (CZE). Awarded the International Master (IM) title in 2007 and his Grandmaster title in 2014, Žilka has established a prominent identity as an active tournament competitor, domestic league player, and key representative for the Czech national team. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2613 in April 2022. Alongside his career as a professional player, Žilka is a software engineer with an active focus on computational science, notable for developing the mobile chess training application Alien Chess.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Štěpán Žilka was born in Litovel, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). He achieved early international success in junior chess, securing first place at the Mitropa Under-14 Rapid Championship in Graz ahead of several future elite players. After progressing through the national junior ranks, he earned his IM title in 2007.

Over the following years, Žilka established himself as a consistent force in central European round-robin and open tournaments. In 2009, he won the C-Group of the Olomouc Chess Summer ahead of GM Konstantin Chernyshov. He repeated this success in 2015 by clinching first place in the stronger A1 GM Group of the same festival. This steady progress culminated in FIDE awarding him the Grandmaster title in 2014.

On the domestic circuit, Žilka won the Czech Individual Rapid Championship. In classical national competition, he competed regularly in the Czech Chess Championship. After placing eighth in the 2025 championship in Plzeň, Žilka achieved a major individual milestone at the May 2026 Czech Chess Championship held in Brno. He secured the individual bronze medal, finishing third in a highly competitive field with a score of 5.5/9.

During his club career, Žilka started with TJ Tatran Litovel before transferring in 2012 to the dominant Czech club 1. Novoborský ŠK, with whom he has won multiple national Extraliga league titles. He has also played extensively as an international league player, representing Blackburne Nickelsdorf in Austria and both SF Deizsiau and SC Heimbach-Weis-Neuwied in the German Chess Bundesliga.
