Matthew J Wadsworth (born June 27, 2000) is an English chess grandmaster. Representing the English chess federation (ENG), he was officially awarded the Grandmaster (GM) title by FIDE in 2025. He achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2532 in April 2026. Primarily a tournament competitor and professional coach, Wadsworth is a former elite junior player who has successfully transitioned to full-time professional play, representing several top-tier clubs in European leagues.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Wadsworth learned to play chess at a young age in Maidenhead, England, where he quickly progressed through the ranks of the Maidenhead Junior Chess Club. He represented England at several international junior events, including the World Youth Chess Championship in 2007. His early junior achievements include a fifth-place finish at the World Under-12 Chess Championship in 2012 and winning the British Under-18 Championship in 2015.

Wadsworth completed his title progression alongside a rigorous academic path:

• FIDE Master (FM): Awarded in 2016 upon crossing the 2300 FIDE rating threshold.
