Biography & Major Career Milestones
Rodshtein demonstrated exceptional talent during his youth, establishing himself as a top junior player. He won two silver medals at the European Youth Chess Championships: first in the Under 10 section in 1999, and later in the Under 14 section in 2002. His early career peak arrived in 2004 in Heraklio, Greece, where he won the Under 16 division of the World Youth Chess Championships. He attained the International Master (IM) title in 2005, followed by the Grandmaster (GM) title in 2007.
In domestic competition, Rodshtein won the Israeli Chess Championship in 2006 at the age of 17. He nearly repeated the feat in the 2008 Israeli Chess Championship, sharing first place but ultimately finishing as the runner-up on tiebreaks.
On the international open circuit, Rodshtein has registered several major victories:
- In 2007, he tied for first place in the 25th Andorra International Open.
- In 2010, he claimed clear first place in the 12th International Open of Sants, Hostafrancs and La Bordeta in Barcelona, and placed second in the Politiken Cup.
- In 2013, he won the Univé Open in Hoogeveen, Netherlands.
- At the European Individual Chess Championship 2025 in Eforie Nord, Romania, Rodshtein scored 8.5/11 to finish in a three-way tie for first place with Matthias Blübaum and Frederik Svane. He secured the bronze medal on tiebreaks, concluding the tournament with a crucial final-round victory over GM Shant Sargsyan.
In elite knockout tournaments, Rodshtein qualified for and competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2007, 2011, 2015, 2017, and 2025. During the 2015 FIDE World Cup, he advanced to the second round by defeating GM Eduardo Iturrizaga before being eliminated by GM Vassily Ivanchuk.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Rodshtein is a classical-universal grandmaster whose play is characterized by deep theoretical preparation, strategic clarity, and calculated concrete dynamism. His work as a second for elite players has reinforced an analytically rigorous approach to positions, prioritizing structural soundness and logical piece coordination.
While capable of sharp, calculated tactical attacks, Rodshtein generally emphasizes king safety and active piece development over speculative play. In classical structures, he displays excellent handling of space advantages, using patient pawn steps to restrict opponent activity.
His strategic repertoire features high proficiency in:
- Isolated Queen's Pawn (IQP) structures: Navigating the fine balance between the dynamic attacking potential and the long-term endgame liabilities associated with an isolated d-pawn.
- Catalan-type pawn configurations: Systematically applying pressure along the long diagonal using a fianchettoed light-squared bishop.
- Active Rook Endgames: Demonstrating precise technical conversion of micro-advantages, as illustrated in his complex technical victory against Shant Sargsyan at the 2025 European Individual Championship.
- Defensive Resilience: Utilizing active counter-defense to hold structurally compromised or slightly passive positions.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
Rodshtein is highly regarded for his theoretical expertise. As White, he is primarily a queenside player, while his Black defensive systems focus on dynamic counterplay and strategic stability.
1. As White
Rodshtein's White repertoire centers on 1.d4 and 1.Nf3, frequently steering the game toward Catalan, Queen's Indian, or Bogo-Indian setups.
-
Catalan Opening (Open Variation): His primary competitive weapon against 1...Nf6 and 2...e6.
-
Queen's Indian Defense: Rodshtein regularly counters the Queen's Indian with the classical fianchetto line.
-
Bogo-Indian Defense: A reliable positional choice when Black avoids the Nimzo-Indian.
-
Queen's Gambit Declined (Exchange Variation): Utilized to enforce structural pressure in the center.
2. As Black
Rodshtein's Black repertoire features a solid yet counter-attacking profile against both 1.e4 and 1.d4.
-
Caro-Kann Defense: His principal defense against 1.e4, frequently countering the Advance Variation.
-
Grünfeld Defense: Employed to generate early pressure against White’s center.
-
Ruy Lopez (Berlin Defense): Used as a reliable and resilient barrier against 1.e4.
