Representing the Israeli federation (ISR), Steinberg climbed through the national youth ranks, earning his FIDE Master (FM) title in 2011, the International Master (IM) title in 2013, and the Grandmaster title in 2017. His career-high classical FIDE rating of 2565 was achieved in November 2024. Operating as a competitive tournament professional, team league player for prominent Israeli and European clubs, and an online content creator, Steinberg has established himself as a solid presence in both over-the-board elite opens and online blitz arenas.
Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, Steinberg began playing chess at an early age and completed his primary education at the Hebrew Reali School. Showing rapid tactical acuity, he secured his FIDE Master title in 2011. By 2013, he achieved his third norm and was awarded the International Master title at the age of 15.
At the 2017 Gibraltar Masters, Steinberg delivered an outstanding performance. Playing as an International Master, he drew with world-class grandmasters Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in Round 2 and Peter Svidler in Round 3. He ultimately finished the strong Swiss tournament with 6.5/10, satisfying his final grandmaster norm requirements. FIDE officially conferred his Grandmaster title later that year.
In 2018, Steinberg participated in the Czech Open in Pardubice, starting the main open event with a perfect 4/4 score. In August of the same year, he defeated Czech grandmaster Tadeáš Kriebel in a rapid match at the Novoborska Sachova Corrida tournament in Nový Bor.
Steinberg has consistently competed in the Israeli National Championship. During the 40th Israeli Championship held in Haifa (2021), he faced elite domestic opposition. Alongside his playing career, Steinberg studies economics and information systems at university and produces instructional chess content on YouTube and other digital platforms.

Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Steinberg is a pragmatic, classical player with a style deeply rooted in concrete tactical calculation and technical endgame conversions. His approach is highly balanced, preferring clear positional advantages over speculative piece sacrifices.
In the middlegame, Steinberg excels at limiting his opponent's counterplay by enforcing central control and maintaining structural integrity. He is comfortable handling space advantages and restricting minor pieces in closed or semi-closed structures. His handling of king safety is characterized by prophylaxis, preferring deep defensive setups before commencing an attack on the opposite flank.
Steinberg demonstrates strong technical proficiency in queenless middlegames and simplified endgames. He shows high accuracy in converting minor-piece advantages (such as knight-versus-bishop imbalances) and active rook endgames. His defensive identity is stubborn and reliant on concrete tactical resources, often seeking dynamic counter-chances when positioned passively.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Steinberg plays almost exclusively 1. e4, directing games toward classical structures where he can apply positional pressure.
Against 1...e5, Steinberg's primary choice is the Ruy Lopez. He frequently employs the Berlin Defense to steer play toward technically demanding endings:
He is also highly prepared to face Petrov's Defense, as demonstrated in his 2026 standard game victory against Boris Gelfand:
Against the French Defense, Steinberg prefers the Tarrasch Variation:
When facing the Sicilian Defense, he contests the main lines of the Najdorf Variation:
He also employs standard responses against the Scandinavian Defense:
2. As Black
As Black, Steinberg utilizes sharp and asymmetrical setups against 1. e4 and adopts solid, traditional pawn structures against 1. d4.
Against 1. e4, his most frequent defensive weapon is the Sicilian Defense, particularly the Najdorf Variation:
Against sideline setups such as the Canal-Sokolsky Attack (or Moscow Variation), he neutralizes White's spatial aims via:
Against 1. d4, Steinberg relies on the Slav Defense to maintain solid central control:
For more complex and dynamic middlegame play, he transposes into the Semi-Slav Defense:
