Andrew Hong

Overview

Andrew Zhang Hong (born November 23, 2004) is an American chess grandmaster representing the United States. Hong officially earned his FIDE Grandmaster title in 2021 and achieved his career-high classical FIDE rating of 2598 in April 2026. He is primarily known as a prominent junior tournament competitor and a formidable rapid and blitz player. He was formerly a member of the Kasparov Chess Foundation's "Young Stars" program and was recognized with the prestigious US Chess Scholar-Chessplayer Award in 2022.

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Hong was introduced to chess in 2012 by his older brother and quickly rose through the youth ranks, becoming nationally ranked number one for his age group in the United States. He progressed through FIDE titles steadily, obtaining the Candidate Master title in 2017, the FIDE Master title in 2017, and the International Master title in 2019—securing his final IM norm at the 2018 Saint Louis Invitational.

In September 2021, Hong earned his Grandmaster title after scoring his third and final GM norm at the Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy Labor Day Norm Invitational in North Carolina. Earlier that year, his rising strength was demonstrated by tying for first at the 2021 Philadelphia International and sharing third place at the 2021 World Open.

In 2022, Hong tied for first at the Denker Tournament of High School Champions alongside Arthur Guo and Sandeep Sethuraman, and finished second in the U.S. Junior Chess Championship. He continued his high-level junior performances by tying for second place at the 2023 U.S. Junior Chess Championship and securing a clear second-place finish at the 2024 U.S. Junior Chess Championship behind Christopher Yoo.

On the international circuit, Hong participated in the 2023 World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. He has also shown strong rapid chess capabilities in regional open events, winning Group A of the Saint Louis Spring Chess Classic in 2025 with a score of 6/9 and finishing fourth at the 2026 Grenke Chess Open.
