Overview

Borki Predojević (transliterated as Borki Predojevic) is a Bosnian chess grandmaster born on April 6, 1987. Representing the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) federation, Predojević achieved the International Master (IM) title in 2003 and became his country's youngest-ever Grandmaster (GM), with FIDE officially awarding the title in 2005 after he fulfilled the final requirements in October 2004 at the age of 17. He reached a career-high classical FIDE rating of 2655 in May 2016. Predojević is recognized as a premier tournament and team player, a distinguished youth prodigy—holding European U12 (1999), European U14 (2001), and World U16 (2003) championships—and an experienced national team captain and FIDE Trainer (certified in 2016).

Biography & Major Career Milestones

Borki Predojević was born in Teslić, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He began playing chess around 1995. During his youth development, he secured multiple junior continental titles representing FR Yugoslavia, including the European Under-12 Championship in 1999 and the European Under-14 Championship in 2001, where he finished ahead of Sergey Karjakin. Following his federation transfer to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2003, Predojević won the World Under-16 Championship in Kallithea, Greece, with a score of 9/11, finishing ahead of future elite grandmasters Evgeny Tomashevsky and Radoslaw Wojtaszek.

Predojević’s title progression was exceptionally rapid. He obtained the FIDE Master (FM) title in 2000, followed by the IM title in 2003. His IM norms were earned at the Third Saturday IM tournament in March 2002 (9/12), the First Saturday IM tournament in July 2002, and the Belgrade "Obrenovac" Open in November 2002. He fulfilled the final requirements for his Grandmaster title on October 30, 2004, at the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvià, and FIDE officially awarded him the GM title in 2005.

At the international level, Predojević’s tournament achievements include victories at the Open Metalis in Bizovac (2006), the Zagreb Open (2007), the Hit Open in Nova Gorica (2008), and the Acropolis International Open in Athens (2009). He shared second place in the elite double round-robin Bosna Supertournament in Sarajevo in both 2007 (behind Sergei Movsesian) and 2009 (sharing second with Wang Hao, behind Pavel Eljanov). In June 2013, he competed in a high-profile four-game friendly rapid match in Lillehammer against World Champion Magnus Carlsen, which ended in a 2.5–1.5 victory for Carlsen.

Parallel to his playing career, Predojević has established himself as a prominent chess coach. Certified as a FIDE Trainer in 2016, he was appointed head coach of the Austrian national team in 2017. He has also trained top talents, including contributing to the development of Norwegian GM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen.
