Biography & Major Career Milestones
Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, Schoppen emerged as one of the country's prominent junior talents. In May 2019, he gained international attention in the online chess community by setting a world record in "Puzzle Rush" on Chess.com with a score of 70. Shortly after, in July 2019, Schoppen won the Open Dutch Championship (Open Nederlands Kampioenschap) in Dieren at the age of 17, becoming the youngest winner in the event's history. Later that year, in November, he claimed the Dutch Blitz Championship title.
Schoppen's path to the Grandmaster title culminated in early 2020. In February 2020, he won the Open section of the Daniël Noteboom Memorial Tournament in Leiden. In March 2020, he secured his third and final GM norm by winning the 4th New Chess Brains Turnier in Hamburg with a score of 6.5/9, finishing a full point ahead of GM Dmitrij Kollars. FIDE officially ratified his Grandmaster title later that year.
In September 2020, Schoppen participated in the European Online Youth Chess Championship, finishing second in the Open U18 section with 7/9 on tiebreaks behind Andrey Esipenko to claim the silver medal. He continued to build his tournament resume with a victory at the III Open Internacional CA Monteolivete in Valencia in July 2023, scoring 7.5/9 to win on tiebreaks.
In December 2023, Schoppen competed in the European Rapid Chess Championship in Zagreb, Croatia. Entering the final round tied for first place on 8.5/10 alongside Haik Martirosyan, Alexey Sarana, and Bogdan-Daniel Deac, Schoppen played a marathon 119-move game against Sarana, eventually losing in a double-knight versus bishop-pair endgame. He finished fourth overall in the championship.
In June 2025, Schoppen tied for first place alongside Liam Vrolijk and Eelke de Boer with a score of 6.5/9 in the IM/GM round-robin at the 17th BPB Limburg Open. In October 2025, he claimed first place at the 4th Hvar Open in Croatia with an 8/9 score. He followed this with another open success at the XXXVI Międzynarodowy Festiwal Szachowy Cracovia 2025 (held over December 2025 and January 2026), where a final-round victory secured him clear first place.
Elite Team & Event Performance

- Dutch Meesterklasse: Plays for the first team of the Kennemer Combinatie, helping the squad win the national championship in 2024. He was the league's top scorer in the final rounds of the 2023/24 season, winning the New In Chess Beauty Prize for his victory over Michaël van Liempt. He previously represented the Leidsch Schaakgenootschap (LSG) first team, which he joined at age 14 in 2016.
- European Club Cup (2017): Represented his team in the European club event.
Playing Style, Material Tendencies & Endgame Profiling
Schoppen is a dynamic and tactical calculator, typical of the computer-trained generation. His speed in identifying tactical opportunities is elite, a trait widely recognized after his record-breaking puzzle-solving performances. Reflecting his tactical identity, Schoppen co-authored Tactics Training Alexander Alekhine with Frank Erwich, showcasing his mastery over complex combinational lines and aggressive sacrifices reminiscent of the fourth world champion.
In the transition from the opening to the middlegame, Schoppen actively seeks unbalanced positions with asymmetric pawn structures, often accepting structural compromises in exchange for piece activity and direct attacking paths. In defense, he shows extreme tenacity, often defending inferior positions by creating tactical counter-threats. His technical endgame skills are highly developed, though his 2023 loss to Alexey Sarana highlighted the extreme practical difficulties of defending knight-versus-bishop pair endgames in high-stakes rapid formats.
Opening Repertoire & Theoretical Move Orders
1. As White
Schoppen primarily opens with 1.e4, but also has a highly developed 1.d4 and 1.Nf3 repertoire to match-prepare against specific opponents.
Against the Caro-Kann Defense (1...c6), Schoppen heavily favors the Advance Variation, aiming for a space advantage:
He also tests the active Botvinnik-Carls line against the Caro-Kann:
Against the Sicilian Defense (1...c5), he commonly enters open mainlines, including the English Attack against the Najdorf:
Against the Open Ruy Lopez, he plays mainlines and sidesteps with early deviations:
When deploying the Queen's Gambit or Catalan systems, he prefers setups featuring an early kingside fianchetto:
2. As Black
As Black, Schoppen frequently relies on the Sicilian Defense for dynamic counterplay against 1.e4, or the solid French Defense.
In the open Sicilian, he often steers into the Najdorf Variation:
Against 1.d4, Schoppen utilizes Indian Defenses, opting for the Nimzo-Indian and Queen's Indian systems to establish counterplay on the light squares:
He also employs the Nimzo-Indian Defense:
